th350 rebuild ??????

i got a th350/205 combo that i am thinking bout puttin in the 70 3/4 4x4 i got here . i had this in a differant truck and all it had was low ( 1st) gear and would not change into any other gear . so i called around to see what it would cost to have it rebuilt and the want 450 + converter ( thats me taking it out and puttin it back in ) i already got the trans out and there is no motor in the truck yet
is that a good price or is it to much ????????
i would really like to have a 400/205 but i dont have one and they are big bucks here local as in 500 + for one that needs rebuilt and then big bucks to get it rebuilt and well i just dont got that kinda $$

i have heard of rebuilds around a $1000.00 so that sounds like a good deal to me.guess it depends on warranty etc.

I just got a 700r4 from Outlaw transmissions just north of Atlanta. He put on the adapter for my 205, set it up for torque converter lockup, shift kit, and built it for 500 hp for 915. That's including the core charge. I did have to buy the shaft from advanced adapters.

That don't sound too bad to me either. I have heard that 600-700$ is average up here but I got mine for 500 from a friend so.

There is a small chance the lack of shifting could be a bad vacuum modulator or lack of vacuum. Have you ruled that out?

TH350's will shift without the vaccum modulator. The modulator is not the sole determining factor for shift timing. I've had the diaphram fail inside the modulator on the th350 in my Nova and it actually drove just fine. Hit every gear when put into drive or manually shifted gears. Only problem was the amount of tranny fluid the engine sucked in through the vaccum line and burned in my #6 & #8 cylinders. You would have thought I was spraying for mosquitos is smoked so bad while coasting.

It's been a while since I had a th350 apart, but if it won't get any gear but first, I'd bet it was a mecahnical problem within the geartrain. Either the intermediate clutch or one of the sprags broke.

They aren't that hard to rebuild if you want to do it. Rebuild kits are under $200. If you can get your hands on a manual to follow it's actually not to bad to do. If you do, heres a tip for the assembly if you don't have a jig to hold the tranny tail end down. Get a 33 gallon drum they sell oil in. Make sure it's clean first, but it's the perfect size to drop the tail end first and the bellhousing holds it at the top.

What did he do for the lock up?

I dropped a grand into my th-400 to have it rebuilt.

I've got a th-400 that came from a running/driving truck I'd let go if your interested.
Also have a th-350 in the same condition.

the th350 does need vaccuum to shift.that is what this tranny relies on,that could possibly be your problem,but why not rebuild it yourself,if you are capable of pulling out a tranny,you can rebuild it,just take 1 part out at a time and keep them all in line.once you have them all out,simply reinstall with your new bands and clutches.although you must remember to soak all of your new parts in tranny fluid for at least 15-30 minutes before assembly.my first one took me about 2-3 hrs from start to finish,im down to about an hour now.they are pretty simple
