Where did this trans come from ?!?

I picked up this 66 fleetside swb last week with a 350/4 speed in it. I'm guessing that the truck was originally a straight six, and still has the factory rearend in it, because the 350 screams in 4th gear going 55. I'm looking for a new shifter for it, but I don't know what it came from. Somebody told me maybe a Nova or Chevelle since it comes through the floor sort of diagonally. Anyway - everything I've come across has reverse top left, but this one is bottom left. The trans has "L120" cast into the side of it. Whatcha think? I'm just a painter, so I'm constanly having to learn engine stuff!

Re: Where did this trans come from ?!?

I did some research and with the info you've given, I'm not coming up with anything. One possible solution is that the reverse shift tab is mounted upside down, which would put reverse in the back position instead of forward where it should be. By diagonally, do you mean kinda to the left of the trans vs in the center. When I first got my 66 it had a 350/4speed combo in it along with 4.11 gears in the rearend and according to the tach 60 mph was at 4000 rpms. definitely not a joy to drive. I'm betting that you have a muncie/saginaw/borg warner tranny with the reverse tab mounted wrong. If this is the case its a very easy fix. All you have to do is remove one bolt, flip the tab and adjust the linkage.

mr gasket makes a good four speed floor shifter. I have used many of them over the years with no problems. and they are universal for many different trannys and come with all the hardware and brackets. about $150 in my area.

the shift pattern sounds like an sm420 but the diagonal shifter has me scratchin my head.

Sorry Derric, this debate has come up before, and the general consensus was Mr. G shifters are CHEEEEEEEEEESY. At that time, I don't think there was anyone who had anything good to say about them. I would spend a little extra and get a Hurst, B & M, or a Lokar.
