need cam advice

Hi guys, i need some advice on choosing a cam for my truck. I have a mostly stock 350 with and edlebrock intake and 600cfm carb (will be upgrading to a 750), headers with 3in piping and flows dumped before the axle, and an hei distributor. I'm looking for something that makes good power between 1000-4000rpm, which i know doesnt narrow the results any. I just want something with some extra ooomph. Also i was told to go with a roller cam, but from reading around it seems expensive and complicated, whats your take. Been looking to get a kit with springs and lifters id figured that would be best. Im trying not to spend more than $400. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: need cam advice

I had really good results using the Edelbrock performer camshaft and lifter kit, especially in that rpm range. I don't think there would be a need to upgrade to a 750 cfm carb either. It is a mild cam that produces good lower rpm power, and maintains a smooth idle and plenty of vacum. Plus if your already running the performer intake, their made to match each other.

Re: need cam advice

^^^^I agree that the 750cfm may be a little big for your setup. I've got roughly the same setup 350/mild rv cam/performer intake and I'm running 650cfm and I sometimes think I bought too big. I guess I'm hoping to grow into it someday.

Re: need cam advice

I had a Crane 268 hydraulic cam in the 350 in my Chevelle I just sold. It had nice power, but the 750 carb was too much and the gears were too high. It had a Performer intake and headers with HEI and supercoil. Flowmaster 2 1/2" exhaust too.

Re: need cam advice

Don't be ashamed- we're all gear-heads here. It's nice to have a little lope.

This may be only partially helpful. A year or so ago I was on a cam makers website- they had mp3 files of different motor/cam combos. I *think* it was the crane website- but it could have been Comp. Cams too... I have a somewhat lopey idle with the stock cam that comes in the 330 hp GM crate engine. It's a little flat until I get to about 1500- but after it's very nice.

I think it's a 212/224 grind?

Re: need cam advice

i went form the performer cam 204/214 to 214/224 love the difference..
and i retarded the camshaft as well.
im running 8.5:1 cr as well. 600cfm carb on a 305 it pulls hard from idle to 5000-5500rpm

things to remmeber low compression love wide lobe seps... ie 112-114* the bigger cams run 108-110*

im runing a 112* i think my tq would im prove with the wider lobe sep of 114*
