help me pleez!

Ok I just installed power steering on my 70, Now everything I'm using is used so keep that in mind & I know its better to go new but let me tell you my problem. I installed everything & at first I had no power steering, then I installed another pump(used) now I have power only when turning to the left, I have bled all the air out & you can here the pump working when turning left but not when turning right. I'm thinking it's the box because that sends the signal to the pump right? Now before I get bashed for using used stuff all of it was free, but I guess that free ain't always better. If anybody has suggestions on what might be causing this please let me know before I start tearing it all back out. Thanks.

Re: help me pleez!

If it weren't for used stuff I wouldn't have my '71 -10 farm truck.

It does sound like there is a problem in the box, but I am sure some one that is more knowledgeable will chime in shortly.

Re: help me pleez!

yeah I hope so,a reman. steering box is only $140 at Oreilly so unless a miracle happens I guess I'l start saving. Maybe I shouldn't have blown air through it before installing.

Yep, Sorry andy, but it sounds like you need a box. dont feel bad about free or used parts. If it had worked look how much you wood have saved. I would have done the same.

Believe me, nobody on this board will flame you for using used parts. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a used steering box in the parts section that was pretty cheap.

Re: help me pleez!

when you bled the system did you do it with the wheels off the ground? that helps and also did you change the center link?

Re: help me pleez!

Are you talking about what bolts to the pitman arm? at any rate all that is original. Was I supposed to change that too? It doesn't seem like its binding or anything.

Re: help me pleez!

try disconnecting pitman arm from center link and see if the effort of the box is smooth from left stop to right stop and back again if it is smooth all the way from stop to stop that means you have a geometry problem in the linkage from the new pitman arm // you could see if the old pitman arm will fit on the new box

Re: help me pleez!

OMG!!!! I can't believe it, let my truck sit for about a day & a half, go out to move it back into the garage, actually was going to try & flush system & use some Lucas ps fluid to see if it would do anything, anyway fire it up to pull it into the garage & I turn the wheel right & it kind grabs but feels like its loosening up some, so I go back & forth a few times & it gets easier & easier, now I have power steering!!!! I don't know if it maybe still had some air in it or if the ps fluid loosened something up in the box, whatever it works!!! now its time to upgrade to power brakes, but first gotta get rid of that big ole ugly steering wheel.
