Fuel cell install time (long)
I am getting the parts together that I will need to do my fuel cell install in my 68 SWB Fleet. I already have a fuel cell that was ordered from fuelcellguy. Need to know if I am leaving anything out. So if anyone has done one of these notices I am missing something then please chime in
Going to call inline tube and order a custom line that will run down the frame rail up to the carb. Going to have a filter in the middle somewhere. Gooing to ask inline tube to put the correct fittings on the line so that I can mate up both sections of the line to the fuel filter. Need to get some frame clips to keep it all in place. Anyone know where I can get frame clips? Bed will be coming off when this is done for ease of installation. Once the bed is off it will be sand disk time to get the surface rust off of the frame and then paint it. Tank install is pretty straight forward. I have the mounting hardware that fuelcellguy sent out. I will get some rubber to put between the brackets and the frame so it wont squeak. I was planning on using a sidemarker fill but the rubber pieces on the hoses here in California are already a tight fit and I was reading that the next generation pumps will have even thicker ones installed so I will be grafting in a fuel door next to the side marker that came off of a 90 silverado. After its grafted in whats the best way to smooth out the welds? I think that is it. Sorry for it being so long and kinda drug out but I dont want to miss anything on this. Thanks The other Brad

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
Keep us informed with pics, I just got my FCG tank too, so I'll be watching. I went with a tail light filler, but Palf70step grafted a door into his bedside, so he may be able to give you some insight.

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
You can get the fuel line clips from Inline Tube. Good luck getting them to bend the lines for you, I asked if they had a line set and they said they would send me out a length of tubing and I should bend my own. I should call and tell them thanks, I bought a very good 3/8 bender and 20' of ss 3/8 tube for less than what they wanted for just the tube. You may also need to move the rear crossmember back a little farther than it's stock position.

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
I called inline tube and kinda got the same. They were helpful in telling me what I needed but they would not do it. I hung up the phone and a few more questions popped in my head.
So let me fire away here. For those of you that have done this install did you run a filter in between the line and the pump? If so did you run hard line to rubber line or was it hard line to the filter and screwed into the filter? I am confused about a an fitting versus a compression fitting etc. I know enough about NPT to get along but the rest leave me confused. So if anyone can share what they used I would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
I also recently picked up my fuel tank from Fuelcellguy, but have not started the installation. I will be watching for pics of yours.

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
I cut a hole in the tank for my pump (I have an LT1) and used the fuel line I had. I got my fuel line from a Caprice in the junk yard. It had the connections I needed for the fuel injection.
The install is pretty straight forward. The hardest thing is drilling the holes. I have leaf springs and needed to move the bracket that holds my break line. I didn't take pictures as I couldn't find the wife's camera. One thing that I did was to drill the holes small and then thread them. I screwed the bolts from inside the frame because I didn't want to take the bed off and my arms didn't bend in the right places. Last edited by low'n slow; 02-26-2008 at 06:42 AM. |

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
you need to run a gas line to the pump but have a short piece of rubber hose from the frame rail to the pump to allow for flex of motor mounts // a filter works best between the pump and the carb

Re: Fuel cell install time (long)
I would not use a compression fitting on a fuel line. With the vibration and flex there would be a real chance for leaks. Also you need to properly tighten these types of fittings or they will crack/ egg shape and leak. I am running a hard line along the frame within 6" of the tank and rubber hose from the tank to the hard line, also done the same at the fuel pump. This will take out the body/ motor flex and the vibration off of the line connections. I would also put ant fuel filter inline after the fuel pump. It is easier to push fuel through a partial restriction than it is to pull it through, you could possibly starve the pump that way.
