6 Cylinder Engines

This is just a short question. What 6 cylinder engine came standard in a 67 C-20?

I normally deal with V-8s but plan on putting a 6 in the next truck I am going to hopefully build in the future. I know I am a little different, at least my son thinks so, because I want to build a '67 basic short stepper with a 6 and 4 speed granny tranny. My son likes Big Blocks or Small Blocks with a lot of power.

I am collecting stuff now, so far I have a '70 GMC short frame, a small window cab and front clip off a '67 and a 4 speed tranny.

Thank you in advance.

Danny

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

I had a 67 C-10 and it came off the line with a 292 and I think that was the only 6 cylinder that they offered that year.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

I've read that " Both the 250 I-6 and 292 I-6 engines were avialable for all 67-72 trucks". I don't know that first hand though.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

260 and 292's were both offered in these series of trucks.

230's were discontinued a few years before hand, and 194's never made an appearance in pickups.

here's to keepin' it inline man, glad to see another sixer gettin' out there.

250 was standard and a 292 was optional

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

If it were me I'd put the 292 in it, beings how it's a C/20
But either a 250 or 292 will be fine

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

I agree with the above. Chances are the C20 had the 292 anyway. The only thing I'd suggest would be to look at a T5 before you commit to the four speed. The OD of the 5 spd will make the truck much more versatile . You won't be able to do many smoke shows, but it sure will go down the highway better.

There's a few of us hard-core inliners here...always looking for more!

TDave:
There's a thread on www.inliners.org in the Hi-Performance Forum about using the Vortec 4200 in a truck other than a Trailblazer. The big issues are the electronic controls.
Shyguy: The 292 is an amazing L6, if you build it right. 250s sometimes came in C/20s but only as a bare bones no option set up.

I have been waiting for about 4 days for inliners.org to approve me so I can view the forums. Looking forward to seeing what those guys are doing with these engines.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

If you plan on using a 6 and want to build it up a little, you need a book.

Chevrolet Inline Six-Cylinder Power Manual By Leo Santucci

It runs $19.95 and the ISBN is 1-931128-15-4

I "think" I got mine from www.motorbooks.com

It covers almost every aspect of the Chevy 6 cylinder engines of all types. There's even a mod to use a cylinder head made from 2 small block ones.Probably impractical except for all out performance but the book also covers the basics.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

Panels right. The book goes for $16.47 on Amazon.com
It's worth the cost of admission even for a street inliner. There's a lot of sources listed and talks about everything from "mild to wild".

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

Have always been curious about the 292. Seen them with many different set ups. Everything from 4bbl HEI to 3 singles. Always thought it would be cool to build a 3 carb 292. Wonder how that that would do as far as mileage goes. With 3.08 with a 4 speed auto with OD. Should be close to or over 20 on highway.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

Joe, the 3 singles could probably be made to get good milage. If you use a set up like 3 dueces. The center carb is the one the engine runs on then the other 2 are only opened when the throttle is mashed.I haven't seen one set up like this but it seems like a workable solution.

Re: 6 Cylinder Engines

Yeah I thought that too Panel. Would take some trial and error to get it set up right. Would be pretty cool have the tranny kick down and the other 2 carbs open up at the same time .
