Eaton Rear End Questions

I am servicing the rear end on my 64 C20 (a 10 bolt Eaton HO52) and had a couple of questions.

1. Who makes a nice heavy cover gasket? The felpro from LMC is paper thin and seems useless.

2. Should I use a sealer on the bolts since they are open into the case?

3. I am trying to figure out the rear end ratio but I can't even see the pinion gear with the cover off. I can only see the ring gear, so I can't count the pinion teeth. Are there any numbers in there to look for?

There should be numbers on the ring gear. I use permatex black gasket maker for the cover. Without the paper gasket. Hasn't leaked yet!

if i remember correctly there were 410s 456s and 513s 410ss being most common and no one makes new gears in mine i have 513s to find out roughly jack up the truck put in neutral then tape a string on the drive shaft then trun the wheel one full trun then count the times that the drive shaft truned that your gear ratio in a crude form it wont be exact but fairly close

I would follow 62's suggestion on the gasket goo. I have used tubes of stuff that last 3 times and not one leak. Its too easy if you prep well.

I found some numbers on the ring gear 32-7. So it looks like a 4.56. I was kinda hoping for 4.10s. But it is nothing 235/85/16's and a TH700 won't fix!

I am going to use silicone for a gasket. But I still have to wait for a new fill plug to come in. Believe it or not the original one has most of the sealing flange broke off.

One thing kind of cool about this rear end though, if you want to do a quick and easy oil change just remove the bottom bolt and refill.

Nothing too spectacular...

The truck has been re-painted once a long while back. The bed wood has been replaced not too long ago as well as the seat cover and arm rest. I could also tell it used to have those "West Coast" style mirrors on it before the re-paint. I may go back to that style of mirror someday.
