column question

My sister and brother in law just bought a 88 burb that was a recovered theft. When they stole it they broke the column lower than I have seen before. They got it on the shifter section instead of up in the turn signal housing. I have a 86 burb I'm slowly parting but it doesn't have a tilt. First does any one have spare column parts to fix the original tilt for sale? If not, would a column swap work? will the 86 non tilt hook up the same as the 88 tilt? My main concerns are the ignition switch, and neutral lockout. I'm trying to keep costs to a minimum for them cause they are recently married, just bought a house, and pretty broke.

Re: column question

The non-tilt will swap over, just be sure to use the ign switch for the non-tilt. The difference is the switches work backwards from each other, one the rod pushes down on and the other the rod pulls up.

Your only other source if nobody has spares is the boneyard. Problem is a lot of them in there got the same or similar damage that yours does. Thieves like breaking columns to steal our trucks.

Re: column question

Well I walked to the burb this morning and decided I wasn't going to take out a tilt and put in a straight. I dug out all the tools and started tearing it down. When I started on it, the shifter lock, steering wheel lock were both broke, and the rack had been popped so the only way to start it was with a screwdriver. I managed to bend the shift lock back into place, and a new rack took care of the other problems. a word of warning about the help brand rack for these columns, they don't fit right! I had to spend about 20 minutes filing this one down so it would work right.
