I'm trying to get my spare rear end but I can't get the carrier out. I've pulled the bearing caps off and the axles are out but I still can't get it out. Any ideas?

hey lated have you tried the two prybar method. one top and one bottom, just pop it out. make sure you have and extra set of hands when doing this so as you don't get a flat foot. Not that that is a bad thing!

You may also want the good ole, tried, but true and all time favorite BFH.

shawn is right,use 2 pry bars and evenly put pressure on the left side. Make sure you dont let it drop.There are shims for side carrier bearing preload and backlash which makes the carrier fit in there really snug.

I just got the carrier for my D60 out today. It was in there tight, also. I'd be carefull prying it.... don't want to damage the internals or knick the mounting surface of the cover.

On my axle that was not mounted under the car:

I placed a strap/tiedown around the carrier and lifted it up just off the ground with a picker. The weight of the axle helped me pull the carrier away from it while I 'gently' rocked/bounced the axle downward. Make sure you've some bracing /padding to keep the axle from hitting the ground hard and get ready to catch the carrier.

Be sure to save the shims (the amount or how many)from each side it will help when you put it back together as you can use these for trial fit.

To add to suville's advice, mark them so they go back on the same side. I once got all messed up when one hit the floor and and broke and I did not see which side it fell out of as they both fell out.

I will add a few tips here also. Like others have said save abd label the shims used per side so they can be used in the same location as a baseline. Also before I remove the main caps I make a mark on them and the gasket surface right next to the mark on the cap that are identical.......these main caps are like engine mains and need to go back in the same exact spot and also right side up. Marking them with maybe a #1 and #2 or just placing 1 dot and 2 dots with a punch on the tops just for referrence.

This may be late and not even avalible but if you notice the 2 (two) large round holes on either side of housing on the flat surface where cover goes on. The part you are putting all the parts in. GM made a "special tool" that helps spread this by means of pins tha fit into the holes (on either side if housing) and spread it to help install or remove the carrier. Maybe it was made for the overpaid union assembly workers who get sick-leave for knuckle-scrapes that the rest of us live by? Look. That is what they are there for and there is a tool. The rest of us just fix it. David

When doing this alone I`ve placed a stout cardboard box,as tall as possible,under the rear for the assembly to fall onto.It just crushes it,but softens the fall.
