How much should this fix cost?

If you can give me some quick help with this I will be grateful. Living in the SW, I have never dealt with such rust issues. Before agreeing to buy this truck, I need an estimate about how much it should cost to have a competent person cut out this rust-through and weld in some sheet metal to erase the problem. Nothing fancy, no painting included – just to remove the rusting and fill the gap in good form. Three pics of the spot are attached. Please respond as soon as possible if you can give me a solid estimate – even just time and materials. Will also put this on one other forum. Thanks in advance.

10 hours labor and $300 in parts approx. (inner and outer rockers -- outer floor pan pieces and possibly cab supports)

I'd guess a grand , maybe more --- but i could be crazy

If you live in the SW why would you consider a truck like that? Is it free?
Around here, SF Bay area, I would say closer to 2K without painting.

personal opinion here, but I would spend the money ona welder, buy the parts and do it myself. It is fairly straight forward and this board has plenty of info. It will save you a bundle and you get to buy a new tool!!!

this is interesting, im in the same boat you are, rotted floor, rockers... ssame spot, and same amount of damage...and i will not be paying $2000 for a job like that. If youfind a good parts sources that has decent prices...i bet yah could do it for 500-800 bucks! My Dad and I ran the costs the day after we bought the truck

Thanks for replies so farstreetstar and neonlarry. This may sound strange given the degree of rot shown, but it appears that the rust damage is limited to this floor area - not into the rocker or other aspects of the cab and supports. Apparently it is from window leakage and prolonged wet carpet in this location. If there is any further rust, I will not buy it. Otherwise, it is in very nice condition and of a type that I need. Any further thoughts?

may want to double check that rocker under the door seal... thats where mine went.

Thanks jogensensc and Ol'Rover. I will be certain to check further to be sure. I have not at all ruled out getting some learning on welding and doing it all myself (have a big Lincoln welder on my 72 GMC 3500) but other demands may not allow me to get to that soon and I would not start using this truck like it is.

yeah, deffinatly look into a mig welder. If you dont do it yourself, be prepared to pay ALOT more $$$.

Hit the junk yards and get you and old buick or caddy hood for around $40 and a body hammer set up for about $30. Cut and make your own floor pieces, but get a new rocker for sure, way too hard to make. By the time you finish you should have enough practice and time with your own welder to weld needles back together.

That should at least cut down on cost. As for time, My time is WAY cheep, so i figure the more time it takes, the less it'll cost.

The reason everyone is say you will need rockers and Cab mount is because it is SO common. Most of these truck have gone thru atleast one cosmedic repair. This hides the real damge. Let me show you. This is my inner drivers door Not to bad. Simple repair.


This is what it looked like on the inside


As you can see there is nothing to weld to for 6 inch around the rot.

Your truck did not rust from the inside out it rusted from the bottom up. Rust will spread way out on the surface before eats thru 18 gage steel. You do not get nice paint next to a hole unless the rust came from the other side. On most trucks the cab supports and inner rockers are pretty much gone before you see that hole in the floor.

Being that the truck is a C/40 - C/70 it is likely that it is just water damage from the topside. Most of these trucks do not rust from the bottom up as bad as C/10-C/30 trucks due to them sitting much higher.

If were mine, and I didn't have the time to fix it correctly, I would have someone lap some sheet metal over the rusted areas and weld in patches until you can stop using it long enough to fix it correctly. Unless the rust is into the cab supports, etc it is not going to hurt anything to patch it up for a while.
