Inside Door handle mechanism ??

The thing that the door handle mounts onto, is it supposed to be stiff (spring back into place) or loose? Is this thing interchangeable with other years? Anyone?

It is supposed to be spring loaded, although it is not terribly stiff. They still work if the spring breaks, you just have to be sure the handle is in the closed position before the door will close correctly.

I don't know if they interchange. I think the door panels on the later years would require a longer shaft on the mechanism, but that is a guess.

My drivers door one is broken (no spring) while the passenger side still is springy.

Wow, 72shadetree, that was a close one! My drivers side door came open in a turn one day, but I was only a little embarassed - not nearly killed.

Therefore, I agree also. Get new door handle mechanisms. They are worth it.

1972 was the only year that the shaft was longer to fit the bigger plastic door panels.
