New and undesided
Hello everyone. I've always wanted to restore and old truck to use as a daily driver, and recently puchased a 1954 3100 1/2 ton chevy truck and my biggest decission right now is that I cant decide what would be the best thing for my truck and my pocket, about my engine. If i buy a new engine do I have to change the transmission? If I change the transmission do I have to change the driveshaft? and so on and so forth. I was thinking on putting a 350/290hp V8 engine on it.

Re: New and undesided
Keep it simple and cheap. My suggestion is a carburated Small Block Chevy, a TH350 transmission and a Camaro rear end. The drive shaft may need to be shortened to fit but this drivetrain is cheap & easy to find parts for.

Re: New and undesided
If you go V8, the 350's are cheaper/easier. You might be able to find a complete car for cheaper. My wife was rear ended on the freeway in our '84 Z/28. It served as a trans./rear for my '54. If you're looking to save $$$, rebuild the powertrain you have. I wish I would've done mine that way sometimes. I'm over my budget and still need a bunch before I see the road with it. Any pics? They're fun projects either way you decide to go.

Re: New and undesided
Take your time in building it, its not going no where. Get all the goodies you want the first time around building. If you really want a nice ride take your time in planning and research finding all the parts your planning on using in your truck I dont care if I get my done in a year or 3 yrs Im patience enough to wait and build it right the first time around and thats piece by piece one at a time. Just my opinion

Re: New and undesided
For a daily driver you might want to consider putting the truck on an S10 chassis. You can get them at a reasonable cost if you watch Craigslist in your area. I have purchased two for under $250 ea. and this usually gives you power steering and power brakes besides a great ride. Probably need to rebuild the front suspension but it is still a decent way to go cost wise. Whatever you do have a good time with it.
