Question custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

hey all,

i know this has been asked a million times. i am not one to give up without a good fight... but alas, i give!
i have searched for about 3 days now on these forums and cant find one single measurement for the inner frame rails and clearence for a short fleet steel bed.
my friend is going to build an aluminum f.i. tank for me(for a favor) but he needs the dimensions under the bed. the truck is away for a week getting some rest so i have no access to her.
PLEASE HELP!

thanks in advance guys!

any suggestions or experience will be greatly appreciated!

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

That was the same plan I found using the search feature.

I remember there was a flaw with the forward-facing hump that wouldn't allow gas to fill into that area, so the tank was modded above and beyond what you see there to bridge the two humps or something.

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

I know this might sounds like a smartass question, but I'm not trying to be a smartass, so please don't take offense:

Don't you have a truck nearby to measure?

Also, you may find that you have different "hazards" to watch out for when building a tank for a stepside than you would with a fleetside. I seem to remember this being true, but ...

Hold on, I'm going to go use the search feature to find other threads on this topic. I'll do your legwork for you.

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

These threads I found using the Search feature. If you didn't try a few searches before posting your question, then I'd highly recommend giving it a shot in the future. Sometimes getting the right terms can be a little tricky, and the 30sec wait between searches is annoying, but you'd be amazed at how many times the same question gets asked over and over again, and how many other people have already done what you want to do, so you don't need to "re-invent the wheel", so to say.

You may find any of these threads helpful to answer some questions you have, and provide plans and pictures of other setups people are using:

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

PS - my frame is tore apart right now - but I can tell you this - if you build to the top of the framerail as you see in the "No Limit" and "Fuel Cell Guy" pictures, then you shouldn't need to worry about interference from bed crossmembers.

If you build the "double hump" tanks pictured, I think those might be for fleetside beds, but I am not 100% on that.

Realize you will need to potentially cut out some stuff to install the tank.

If you want to see pics of my install, please look here: http://satellitehead.com/gallery/thu...album=9&page=9

I bought that tank from FuelCellGuy.

One word of advice: Sometimes it's better to wait and get the right dimensions to build it right, rather than have the wrong dimensions, and have it build wrong, then rebuild it right.

Words from a guy who has spent way too much $$ on his project, and keeps finding himself buying something cheap only to replace it with the "right" part that costs more money. Nothing more insuling to ones intelligence like doing this a half a dozen times.

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

you are right about that!

i do think i will wait until i can get the truck to do it right..

i too have done things or looked for a "deal" only to end up spending 2-3 times more than the part or project would have cost in its most expensive case.

thank you very much for the help SHIFTY!

i guess i just needed to hear that from someone else!

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

I'd do it that way.

The reality is, I could go downstairs to measure everything out for you, but if the tank came out wrong, man ... I'd feel like a real jackass

Re: custom fuel cell, inner frame rail dimensions please?

yeah, i'd feel a whole lot better knowing that it was a custom fit tank, made and mocked up with the actual truck there.

thanks again you guys!!!!
