Is Backfire Necessarily Bad?
I searched some threads, and didnt find anything about my particular "problem".
I just want to know if its necessarily a bad thing, my truck backfires when i rev it out(in park or neutral, not while in drive and smashing the gas) and usually its a few "Pop pop pops". i dont believe its my engine, but i only hear it below me and no from the engine area. i actually kind of like that Mean hoarse sound that the backfire makes. but could it be excess gas burning in the exhaust? or mabye oil or something. plus everytime i start up my truck, it shoots out a decent amount of smoke(not really thick) but its white. figured some of you guys could give me a heads up. im going to get a video of my exhaust hopefully so i can post it on here. thanks again. |

If it is a fast crackling popping sound out the exhaust- you probably have too much timing advance at high rpm. I've seen some low compression engines that are more responsive under load when set like this- but in general- not good. Detonation from too much advance under load can break piston ring lands. Sometimes you won't even hear it pinging.

The first thing I'd do is a compression/leak check to make sure your white smoke is not water seeping into your cylinders and or bad valves. If the white smoke shows up after you run it for a while, then it could just be condensation evaporating when the exhaust gets hot... Then I'd make sure the carb isn't running too rich (dark gray to black smoke). Next I'd check and/or replace all ignition components. Plug wires, plugs, distributor cap and rotor, etc... exploded muffler........I would say someone had a little unburned fuel. That is the worst I have ever seen.
