Re: help with engine casting #

need to find a date code or listing on back of the block maybe casting number to better determine this year...

CKA 1972 350 manual trans. L65 165 2 F A X
CKA 1973 350 manual trans. 145 2 F A X
CKA 1977 350 LM1 L 170 4 B
CKA 1985 305 Roch E4ME carb H LG4 150 4 G B F

that's for the suffix codes only cka.

Re: help with engine casting #

That's a date code, indicating the following:

(V) Flint, MI
(11) November
(28) 28th day of month
I believe the "cka" represents part of the vehicle VIN.

The numbers indicating engine specs are most likely on the driver's side, stamped facing upwards between the head and trans bellhousing. Most often, I find "3970010" which can represent many different engines. It's a bit tricky... you've got to hold a light and your head just right, but they can be read with the engine installed once you get the area cleaned up a bit. In some 80's examples, GM stamped the displacement in large numbers on the driver's side front of the block, just ahead of the mounts.

Here's a great database for finding and breaking down the numbers:

Re: help with engine casting #

I always seen the cka as being the suffix code and you go and search by that. I thought date codes were in a different spot and the other number near the suffix was partial vin?
