What exhaust to use?
I finally have my 64 running again after a 2 year rebuild.....
350 TPI, 700r4 conversion, disc brakes....lalalalalala... the whole works.... What is the right size exhaust to run with this engine? Does it matter? I'm thinking 2.5" with dual Flowmaster 40's........ Thanks Chad

Re: What exhaust to use?
Thats what I would run. I had an 84 chevy at one time with a 383 stroker turbo 350 tranny with 2 1/2 exhaust with 2 chambered flowmasters. It ran very well!!

Re: What exhaust to use?
At the very least I would (and do run) 2.25" pipe to the mufflers then 2.5" tailpipes....
On a virtually stock 5.7L TPI I would do the 2.25" all the way with an "X" pipe. 2.5" all the way is probably overkill and will hurt the low end torque. YMMV |

Re: What exhaust to use?
Not true. Headers have this effect; moving peak torque, but after the collectors you want as free flowing a system as possible. 4" pipes would be overkill in this case, but would not "hurt" torque. I like 2.5" pipes for mild small blocks.

Re: What exhaust to use?
Whats the point of the x-pipe.....?
I was just going to run pipes out in in front of the rear wheels......

Re: What exhaust to use?
A few weeks ago I saw that Thrush makes a ready made mandrel bent 2.5" exhaust system listed for '66-'72 trucks. Of course we all know it will fit back to at least '63. The system comes with an 'H' pipe crossover though and of course with Thrush mufflers. I have yet to find a price on the kit, so I don't know how cost effective it is....although I haven't looked real hard either. Just thought I'd mention this here since I hadn't seen it mentioned before.

Re: What exhaust to use?
I'd go 2.5 manifold back dual exhaust into some flowmaster 50 series's.
Running that on my c10 and it sounds awesome. Scares the crap out of the neighbors, which is a major bonus living in suburbia. |

Haha! That's exactly what I'm compiling! I'm glad that it's having the wanted effect on suburbia.

Re: What exhaust to use?
OK sounds good, got the exhaust thing down now all I need it 2 more cylinders!!!!!!!!!!
OK I will step into the puddle of *&^% called I6 and ask the same question. What size pipes should I run on this MONSTER. I'm currently working on a set up of Offenhauser dual carb set up with a set of fentons. 1.75 to mufflers and 2.00 out? Or 2.00 all the way or 1.75 all the way? Next problem is how can you make it clear the torsion bars and the frame X? So many questions in my head..... Sorry this is my 61 Burb... Last edited by soba_03; 03-12-2008 at 09:29 PM. |

What I get from that is if I wanna run shorty headers I need to go to smaller primary tubes to keep my torque curve in roughly the same place...very interesting

Re: What exhaust to use?
On the I6, I'm running dual exhaust with 2-1/4 pipes. Nice and quiet (what I was looking for) and definitely unclogged the exhaust over the stock manifold and single pipe. I'm using Langdon's cast iron manifolds on a 250.
