Too $$$$ or good deal?

Hey guys... I found this add http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/car/601038432.html and wasn't sure if this was an accurate price or not. I have had the hardest time finding a short bed k10 and now that I found one, I want to jump on it. I am driving up there hopefully tomorrow (tuesday) to check it out. I would just like to have some information in the bag so that I don't make a BIG mistake. Thanks everyone for your help!

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Seems like you could get a rust free one for that much, but I don't know how the market is in your specific area. Personally I'd find a southern truck and have it shipped if I was going to spend that kind of $$

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Sounds a little high to me unless the rust is VERY minor and the rest of the truck is VERY clean. Even if the rust is very minor, you are still going to want to address it on a $9k truck so....

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Actually I've been looking for a swb 4x4 for quite sometime, I did find one finally. I think you need to go look at it in person. He's pretty close to the right price on it IMO. I seen some when I was looking for alot more $$$ or right around that same price. ORIGINAL SWB 4x4's are getting hard to find, they are alot of LWB's 4x4's cut down out there so make sure to look at the frame real good.

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Just my opinion, but it seems too high, I bought an original 71 swb 4x4 last summer for $4500 and it came with two 1971 lwb trucks. Granted the short wheel base was disasembled because the guy started a frame off, but its completely rust free.

Rust in cab corners and door bottoms but not in rockers?

Sounds a little high for this area...BTW...Welcome from Kent, WA! It looks very nice in the photo. I would be a bit wary at this point however. Look at the cab supports, rockers, cowl area of the cab and get some history on the vehicle as well.

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Wow... you guys are great! No kidding, Kent huh? Can I make it worth your while to check out the truck before I buy it? I've got cash! (I'm 10% kidding, but if your interested email me) I'm basically a newb with all this restoration stuff but I'm planning to learn as much as possible and restore the truck over time.

What I want in my truck: I want my future wife to hate it, I want my future dog to love it, I want it to have some muscle for lugging some stuff around, I want to be able to take it camping and do a small bit of off-roading. Is this too much to ask??

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I am SO glad I found this site. I am bringing my dad to go check the truck out tomorrow (Tuesday like I said) around 6pm and will take some pictures. As some added info here is the information I have from the owner already:
Quote:
I bought the truck to restore and have always liked the shortbox 4X4. It is parked most of the time with a trip maybe once a month to town and back (15mi.round trip). I am selling because I need to invest my energy and money in another vehicle I have to restore. The body is very straight, paint is average but I would recommend finishing rust repair and repaint the whole truck. New bumpers front and rear. Glass is good. Transfer case has a slight "rubbing" noise. Tires are like new.
After market intake, carb & air cleaner, but have o.e.
stuff. It is original color combo. The interior is in decent shape, everything works. Needs new window tracks(hard to roll up & down),needs new inner fender wells. It is a nice driver with loads of potential if someone wants to restore or leave as is and enjoy.
Thanks again...

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

The pic makes it look nice, but with the rust mentioned and the OH SO COMMON rust not mentioned you better look it over closely. If I were in the market for a SWB 4x4 I would take a look and see if its not too big of a project..........just remember these parts are readily available for rusted areas......so dont let just that steer you away if its a nice truck otherwise.

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Well guys... Checked it out tonight and it is a mixed bag. The whole drive line is great. Only 76k original miles and I really believe it. Original engine, new intake/exhaust systems. The truck runs and sounds extremely strong.

The bad part is the body. There is definitely some rust. I wasn't able to snap any pictures but there are small holes of rust in a few places including the bed corners and cab corners. Only a couple spots of paint bubbling. But the worst part is under the carpet in the front of the cab. There is about 2-4 inches gone from the front under the carpet. It needs new front wheel wells to drive safely, but other than that, it looks great.

Is this rust going to be a huge problem? Will my feet be hanging through the cab in a year or do I have a couple years to get it all fixed? I know I haven't provided pictures and I may be kind of vague but what is the best/worse case?

He isn't very flexible on the price because he doesn't need to sell it. He just wants to start working on his 64 corvette. I don't blame him, but how far should I go below the $9k asking price? I was thinking starting at $7500, would that be insulting?

Ugh... thanks for all your help!

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

With that much rust $7500 is still more than its worth. I'd seriously try to find one elsewhere and have it shipped in, there are a lot of guys on here that could probably help you check one out if you found one in their area. Patience is really key to finding a good buy, if you rush into it you'll miss other nicer trucks and end up paying a lot more to have yours fixed up. Its almost always cheaper to buy a restored vehicle than it is to do it yourself.

Offer him $7k in a nice professional way. If he is an adult the most he can say is "no" and walk away. IMHO $7k would be a fair deal if it truly has 76k miles.

If he would take that it'd probably cost you the extra $2k you would've spent to repair the rust, then you'd actually have something worth exactly that. Really wouldn't spend any more than that on it though but at the end of the day, its your money and your decision.

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Hubby headed to the Gulf yesterday afternoon and said he saw a '71 (?) 4x4 stepper on the side of the road for sale. Stopped and looked at it, said had rust in usual areas, but everything else looked good. Called the owner & he's asking $6000. I'm heading to the Gulf tomorrow afternoon. If I see it, I'll snap pics and let you compare. I won't be able to post them 'til Monday, though. We have no internet access at the beach....all that gets left behind!!

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

Definately too much money. A couple board members have sold theirs, in much better condition, for that price. If you're looking to spend about 9K, there are plenty out here in AZ in much better condition for 6-8K and plenty of board members that could take a look at them for you. 6-8K + 1k shipping and you'll have a much better start. Heck, fly in to Phoenix look for a couple days, find one and drive it home or ship it. It'll still cost you less in the long run.

As has been said above, since you found that much rust I'd pass on it if I were you. There out there but there not as plentiful as some seem to think. Trust me I know, I looked for 6 months for one like your wanting all over the US.

To me it would be worth it to wait six months and find a really nice one than to go through all the hassles that rust brings along. Be patient and you'll find what you're looking for.

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

I paid $9,000 for mine and paid too much. I love the truck and had to have it. Keep in mind that it had zero rust having come from Tuscon and was nicely equiped with A/C etc. Having said that I still dumped more money in it and it's still not done. Buy wisely in the beginning .

Observe the money sink hole

Re: Too $$$$ or good deal?

I had a decent one for sale forever and couldn't get $4k for it, so I'd say if you like it and want it buy it. We can offer opinions but none of us is you. The rust that is there (guessing from description) isn't a lot but will need to be fixed. If you can weld it's not that big of a deal, if you can't then pass. If you get his number look for awhile and if you don't find something call him back and see if he'll give a better deal. $7500 is reasonable for it, but it's his and he doesn't have to sell it, so be respectful with your offer.

It's a nice looking truck, but if it is that rusty you should pass. Seems like a bit of money for something that need a bit of rust repair. Keep in mind, there is probably more rust than you can see.
