Looking to buy a garage, help?
O.k so I need a 4 car garage and I would be really cool with a steerl building with two end doors. How much am I looking at? I have never purchased something this large and I know the steel garage companies will go down on the price and you can work them.
I know steel has gone up but what neighborhood am I looking at $5,000 or so for the shop? $1,000 for the foundation? Would that get me dried in? I am gonna put it on my dads land since I will be there another year or two until I can buy a house. What do you guys think???? Can I see some pics and measurements? Please post them, thanks guys josh

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
Local rule of thumb. Get an estimate for the concrete work and multiply that by 2.5 and you will get a good idea of the complete cost. This includes electrical, insulation, and doors.

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
A year ago I had this 32x40x14 metal sides/shingle roof pole building with a 6" thick wire/rebar concrete floor done for 20K. I bought the materials package from a locally owned lumber yard. I looked at their ready built plans and adjusted to what I wanted. All posts are 6x6 and eaves all around with facia and soffit. The doors are 14x13 and 10x8. I put the doors where I did cause I already have expansion in mind! I've since poured an apron across the front and seamless gutters added. A lift will be in the future.

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
We are building a shop garage right now. Its 18x28, so not anywhere near four car size. When its all done and completely finished inside I think will be into it close to 20k

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
The steel panels run right about $1.00 sq'.At least that`s what I pay.Are you going with a pole building?I would, there`s no need for a continuous footer foundation. You should call some pole building contractors for estimates. There`s no obligation. They are very competitive on price.Either way you`ll know exactly what you`re dealing with. They may offer options you were not aware of.

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
4 car garage would need to be atleast 24x36. Probably 24 x 40 ish.
Thats about 13 yards of concrete at about $110 per yard. About $600 for trusses Metal roof about $600 Metal walls about $700 Wall studs about $300 Poles about $600 2 big or 4 small doors.......$1200 to $2000 Misc other building materials $1000 Insulation if needed............$4000 At a very min. you need $10,000 if you built it yourself.

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
I built a 24'x28' last year at this time. They started in Feb. and finished it in May. I ended up with a little over $26,000 in it. That was a turn key job.
Here is a picture. I have the whole upstairs made into a weight lifting room for my son. That's his man cave. This isn't a 4 car by no means but to give you a Idea on cost. The price didn't include finishing the upstairs and downstairs I did that myself.

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
I've got a tick over $4000 in this carport cover without the site prep work that I havent got a bill on yet.
It is a 24' X 26' carport sitting on a 26' X 26' slab. Good luck on getting a 4 car dried in for less than $20K.

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
I did a 40x56x16 shop in the fall of 06, 20x14 and 12x10 overhead insulated doors with openers, 5 1/2 thick cement floor with in floor heat tubes and a 10x40 loft across the back wall. Completely insulated, 6 inch in the walls and 10-12 in the ceiling and lined with white steel. I came in around 35 with all included, did everything myself or with friends and family labor except for the doors and finish concrete work. Just for an idea....good luck!!! Unless your planning to buy/build a home near your parents, I would hold off on the garage until you know where you plan on being JMO

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
I am reading this thread with great interest, I'm about to build a garage too. I'll definitely report back with my results and what it costs.
Tentative plan is a 3 car wide, 2 car deep garage, with a double wide door and a single door with a wall seperating the 1 car wide area from the rest of the building so I can set it up as a poor man's paint booth. I figure something like 44 x 40, that should be wide enough I can pull 2 cars into each bay with room for a nice cabinet along the back wall for tools/storage/beer tap/etc. Last edited by Gary; 03-11-2008 at 06:21 PM. |

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
just make sure you get it tall enough for a lift.. ( you may not have plans for one now) but if you ever want one,, you will need the clearance.. my shop is great,, except no way for lift,, (10 foot cealings)

Re: Looking to buy a garage, help?
O.k. I called and got a quote.
30x30x12 2 9x8 foot doors 1 Steel Man door Assembled and built in 1 week or so. $8870 assembled. The slab will be another 1,000. I will just have to pay for my electric every paycheck. This gets me in the dry. They are really nice buildings. I belive Dalton Blevins got the same one.
