FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
Fresh rebuild, works fine. Tested on my truck.
Got it in trade for some other stuff, I don't really need an extra. Needs electric portion of choke and fuel filter housing from your carb. $100 shipped.

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
Ok, I got a PM on it first, just waiting to see if that sale goes through. Otherwise ChaseDale's got first dibs (even though the Irish/Scottish in me says I should go for the higher price ).
I'll post here and PM if the first interest falls through.

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
Well, the PM interest got back to me and said it might be a while and didn't want to hold me up, so ChaseDale, I guess it's yours if you want it. I'll be PM'ing you for details.

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
The carb arrived here today. Looks really clean and can't wait to try it, but I've got some repair work to do to it first. Seems the U.S.P.S. doesn't give a damn how rough they get with your package. The box was torn up and the linkage where you hook the throttle up is bent up pretty bad. I know that it didn't leave your place in that condition. I'd like to choke the S.O.B. that did this. Not sure if I can straighten it up or not, but I'm going to give it a try and just hope that I don't break something in the process. Here are a few pictures. Will keep you updated. ...Joe

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
Good GOD!! What the hell did they do with it? Play soccer the whole way there???
Believe it or not, that was a brand new box I bought the day I shipped it out. If it isn't repairable, let me know and I'll refund you. It's not your fault the shipping screwed it up. I had a funny feeling I should have taken the black part off the horn when I was putting it in the box, but the impatient SOB behind me in line got me rushed. As I said, keep me posted if you get it fixed or not. I just hope the throttle shaft isn't bent. I apologize it got screwed up on the way there.

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
LOL Yeah I got this mental picture of Ace Ventura Pet Detective when he was kicking that box around before he delivered it to that guy, and when Ace handed him the box you could hear the contents rattling. Looks like they did the same thing here. Got some 400 pound mail carriers to play soccer with it or something.
In any case, I worked on it for a bit this evening and I think that I may have it fixed good enough to work. I'll probably try to put it on tomorrow night after I get home from work as long as my wife doesn't have plans for me that I don't know about yet. You know how that goes. I'll let you know how it goes when I get it on my truck. I appreciate the offer to take it back, but hell, I don't have that much in it, and if nothing else, it will be a good parts carb for the carb that I have on the truck now. Besides, it might get torn up worse on the return trip! LOL It's a shame that as much as they charge for shipping these days that they can't be a hell of a lot more careful with other people's stuff. If it had been theirs and got damaged like that there'd be hell to pay, you can bet on it! Anyway, I'll let you know how it turns out. I think that it'll be okay as long as they didn't break anything internally while they were kicking and throwing it! ...Joe

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
Got the carb on tonight. Other than the fact that I can't get it to idle down due to the bent linkage, it works really well! I bent the linkage about as far as I dare to because I'm afraid of breaking it off or something, but it is a good working carb.
Too bad those S.O.B.s at the U.S.P.S. had to be so damn rough with it. The only other problem I had was it was leaking gas around the fuel filter housing. Some good old plumbers tape fixed that up real quick. I went to put the choke off of my carb on this one, and the damn thing's riveted on! Not sure how I'm going to address that yet, but it starts and runs, and the choke is opening without it right now. At least I found out that this was the major problem without a doubt. My old carb wouldn't let it run past an idle. She'll run wide open now! I need to set the timing now after putting a new distributor in, and fix the choke, and I'll be set. Do you happen to have the part for the choke? If you do, let me know and I'll pay you for shipping it down here. Is there an idle screw other than the one on the linkage that I can turn down to set the idle lower? I don't know much about these carbs other than every one of them that I've ever had I've ended up having trouble with at some point. I'm more of a Holley man myself, but I wanted one that I could just throw on and see if this was my problem why it wouldn't run right, and sure enough it was! Many thanks! ...Joe

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
I can try and find one, but I don't currently have one. As for taking the one off your old carb, you can drill out the rivets, then use screws with washers to put it on the carb I sent you.
As for the idle, sometimes the secondaries get popped open just a hair. Try "flicking" the spring on the driver's side of the carb where it looks like the end of a spring is sticking up. Pop the secondaries wide open then drop them shut. Other than that there's the idle adjustment on the bottom on the driver's side and the high idle adjustment on the passenger's side behind and underneath the choke housing. Have you gone around with the WD-40 checking for vacuum leaks? They are prone to being picky about the base gasket. I'll give the guy who rebuilt it a shout and see if he has any tips or tricks and also see if he's got a spare choke element laying around.

Re: FS: 1981 rebuilt Q-jet carb
Hey that would be great and I appreciate the info! If he has one just let me know, and how much it is, and I'll send you the money via PayPal again. I'll also check with O'Reilly to see if that choke element is available separately, although I highly doubt it. I'll see if I can adjust the idle by turning the screws that you mentioned under the choke housing and on the driver side to see if that helps.
I don't want to mess with it too much and end up getting it out of whack or something because it does run pretty good other than the idle being too fast. It may also be calibrated for a 350 and I'm running it on a 305. Would that make any difference? I haven't checked with carb cleaner or anything for vacuum leaks around the base gasket, but I don't hear any whistling or anything like I did with the old carb. I put a brand new base gasket on although I know that sometimes it doesn't matter, but I'll check that as well. Thanks again for the advice and info on the carb. like I said, I don't know very much about the Quadrajets. Holleys have always been my carb of choice, but this was the cheap quick easy way to find out if the carb was the problem. ...Joe
