Mission: Impossible?

O.k. I've been wracking my melon for a couple weeks now on how to get the G.D. Pulley off the PS Pump shown below. I wanna blast and paint it on both sides before I install my J.Y. serp.system! I've tried gear pullers, drift punches, and even retained the services of a deep-bayou voodoo witch (nevermind that- she was hired to get something else off !)

Anyhoo, I really need to get my serp.system on- so if anybody has any nuggets of wisdom- please share!

Re: Mission: Impossible?

That looks like its pressed on. There is a tool to remove it. It hooks in that grove on the end of the pulley and pushes on the shaft.

Re: Mission: Impossible?

Did you try a dedicated ps pulley removal tool or just a gear/pulley puller? I believe that is what kelsfine69 is referring to.

Re: Mission: Impossible?

There is a specific tool to remove those GM style power steering pulleys. You can get one at about any parts store. Don't try using a 3 jaw puller, you'll ruin the pulley... ask me how I know ;-)

Just to clarify what everyone is saying- its a rental tool available at auto zone & such. While you are waiting spray it with a little PB Blaster.

Re: Mission: Impossible?

Yes, what Sport/truck said. If you take it to a parts store they will probably even help you take it off. I did a bunch when I worked at AZ.

Shawn

almost all p/s pump pulleys are held on that way, unless they bolt on to a flange

Re: Mission: Impossible?

the puller is so cheap ,i paid less than $10 that it's not worth getting as a "free" rental with the price of gas going back and forth to the auto parts store. buy the tool you've got for life with only one trip to the store

YES!! you need a specific tool to remove it... DO NOT rent the checker or auto zone tool, they don't work. If you don't have the tool, take the pump to a machine shop and have them pull it off, as mentioned by nuke, if you don't use the specific tool it will reuin the pulley, you will break the flange on the end of the pulley. I made the above mistake on my Jeep motor and reuined the pulley.

BTW - it does not screw on!

The puller kit I bought came with a bolt to press the pulley back on. Shouldn't have to use a press.

I don't know about everywhere, but at Advanace Auto Parts here they will do for you for free with the tool mentioned above and an electric impact wrench. The same tool removes and replaces it as said above also.

Re: Mission: Impossible?

Try using a tie rod puller or something similar to this, you want a puller that will have tangs to fit in the groove. When you want to install the pulley use a heavy grade ready rod and thread it into the shaft on the pump, once it is threaded in put the pulley on, followed by a thick washer and nut. You can use vise grips or something to hold the ready rod now tighten the nut this will press the pulley back on. Here are some pics.

Re: Mission: Impossible?

Don't waste your time trying to find find a shortcut. The correct tool is cheap, and definately worth having around.

I've used mine a million times, definately worth the $30 i spent
