emergency engine help needed

im on vacation 350 miles from home and my truck is giving me major problems. the first half of the trip went very well. then i noticed that my milage started to suck. when i would come to idle, the truck would barely idle and the exhaust was rich and smelled like raw gas. i pulled over and pulled my carb of (qjet) and disassimbled it. i noticed that there was fuel puddled in the intake. i then bent the float down a little and it made it run better but it still idled rough. i called sean murphy and he said that the fuel pump may have gone out and was putting too much p.s.i. out. im going to change out the pump tomorrow. is there anything else i might be missing.

Re: emergency engine help needed

Is the Q-Jet from Sean? If not the well plugs could be leaking badly and cause this (if Sean built the carb he usually takes care that those won't leak). Just another possibility. Also check the needle valve for dirt holding it open.

You might give that a try.

Re: emergency engine help needed

The float may be bad. They will absorb fuel and sink causing the motor to run rich and flood out.

Re: emergency engine help needed

My guess too would be dirt in needle float valve....had a simular problem and it eventually cleaned itself...ran like crap and would not idle for a while though since it was getting to much fuel.
This happened after a fuel filter change on the carb (Q-jet)

Must have an electric fuel pump? I've never heard of the problem with too much psi from a mechanical fuel pump.

Anyway, I've had the same problem in the past and it's always been the carb. As mentioned above, I'm with the carb group. I've had to clean the bowl out real good and either replace or clean the needle valve, the seat and also make sure the float is good.

Please let us know what you find.
