??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

Ok I've been hankering to build a 71-72 4x4 4 speed one ton for a while now and have been rounding up parts lately and was wondering if any body knew how many different shifters came on these trucks and which one fits which I just bought 3 different ones from Teeitup and he said they all came off 67-72 I know I've seen 4 speed humps with the shifter hole way up front and the 4x4 ones were kinda in the middle and was wondering if one of the shifters would have been longer to compensate for this? I have a 1/2 ton 4x4 4 speed truck but I'm pretty sure it has a later model shifter in it because it has 2 bends like the one on the right in the picture.any knowledge shared would be greatly appreciated thanks Mike

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

The first shifter handle is for a NP205 I believe.
Iam not sure of the rest but it probably depends on the trans transfer case combo for the pull back of the shifter handle.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

That 1st trans shifter is the correct shifter for a 4wd.At least it is for the SM465/NP205(`70-up).The other two must be for 2wd since they are so much longer.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

i agree with Tim on this one. if my memory serves me correctly the 2wd shifters were longer and had an extra bend because the shift tower was closer to the dash. not sure if a big block/4 speed shifter was different than a small block/4 speed shifter or not. i've only owned one big block/4 speed truck and that was a LONG time ago.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

My sm465 shifter in my 69 K20 (Sm465/Rockwell t221 t-case) looks like the second shifter with the first being a 71-72 np205 shifter. The one farthest right looks like the shifter for my sm465 in my 84 c20 with a 454/465.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

Well that's just great. It looks like I may need to find a 4wd shifter now too. My 465 came out of a 2wd and it's shifter looks like the one farthest right. I am working on my cab and don't have it on the frame so I can't tell if my shifter will work or not. I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

im sure locdocs diagram will help u plenty but i thought id just confirm that the 2 long shaft ****ers are for 2 wheel drive pickups i have a few different 2wd that have one or the other of those shifter and the dual bend shifter is just like the one i have in my 71 blazer 4x4,
since on the topic does anyone know about a stock 5 speed as an option in a 72 1ton flatbed cause im looking into a purchase on this truck and from what the owner told me its all original down to the 5 speed hd tansmission and ive never heard of any stock 5 speeds in any 67-72 1 tons anyone know anything about this im thinking it was added but i havent crawled uner to see if i can tell if its been added and the glovebox door is long gone

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

I will alos confirm the longer shifter with the bends is for a 2WD truck and the short shifter is 4WD. Ihave my 68 2wd dump parked next two my 70 K10 and compared the shifters one day... about the 5 speed thing....

a few old timers told me about a 5 speed trans out of a C50-80 trucks that can be swapped in place of a 465 pretty easily and was done quite frequently back in the day.... It is NOT an OD trans but you essentially got an extra granny gear in the 7.00 range for a little extra grunt pulling out... the pattern for this trans is somehting like this... a board member here uses it in their avatar IIRC...

1-2-4-R
3-5

Hope that aids to the confusion!!!

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

Mine looks like the second one, but it hits the dash in third. I have a 2WD '67 with the SM465. I would prefer to find a double bender if I can, but I'll probably just make the one I have into a double-bender.

It looks like the 435 shifter to me.It`s hard to tell if there`s an offset to the side or not.

Hey dan42, how about a trade for my 2wd version? I'll PM you. Before this thread came along I was not even aware there were 2 different shifters.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

The green ended one came out of a 67 1 ton, one of the other 2 on the right came out of a 72 1 ton longhorn, (not sure which one though and not sure what the other one came out of) The 205 shifter came out of my 72 4x4.

Re: ??Questions about Original 4 speed shifters??

Guys, if length isn't a problem and your not using a chrome shifter, just put a little heat on it and bend it how you need it, then paint it.....unless your going for strictly OEM. I have bent a couple of them in previous projects, no problems at all.
