Power steering question. Keep me from pulling my hair out.

Ok I'm working on my project(70 GMC) goin into its 7th year. Only get to work on it one day a week. (Maybe) Anyways I've got parts sitting everywhere ready to go into this thing and getting the engine in running shape is hold me up. It has a 350 with later model heads (non-vortec). I put a serpentine set-up off a 88 S-10 on it. Im having problems hooking up the steering box to the PS pump. I have the original steering box and I got one off a 81 model yesterday. So I can use either. The reason I got the other one is I thought I may fit the hoses that came with the 88 pump. So anyway. Should I go with the 70 box? If so how? Do I have to get a hose made? I ordered a pressure side hose from LMC. And i have the hose that came with the 88 pump. Should I cut them up and make one? Im to a point that Im just ready to put on all the chrome ive bought and DRIVE IT!!

Also I have these questions.


Does the 88 s-10 4.3 reverse flow water pump?

Do i need a idler pulley on the passenger side? Brackets have a spot for it between the a/c compressor and the crank.

I'm not sure I can be much help on this but I'll give it a shot.

First off you need to decide which box you want to go with. I think either steering box will work OK. I know that the fittings are different on some but I don't know what year they changed.

I think I would see about getting hoses made if I were you. Take all of the old hoses with you and be sure you know which ends you need where and the lengths so you get it right the first time.... I think I would take the pump and box with me too.

For a company in your area that makes hoses, look under "Hose Couplings & Fittings" in the yellow pages.

on the back of the pump, where the high pressure line goes in, you can remove that fitting, and put an old one on there, the old one will have the fitting you need. There's a spring in there, the stiffer the spring, the less power assist you'll have.
Yes on the reverse flow pump
no idea on the idler since you are alterring the set up.

Longhorn man do you mean my original power steering pump on replacing the fitting on the pressure side?

I asked the parts store for a water pump for a 88 s-10 4.3. So the one I have is rev rotation?

Do i have to change anything for this setup as far as cooling?

Original pump, yes.
If that was what your serp setup came off oif, you should be golden.
swap out the pump, and you'll be fine.

Ok. That sounds easy enough. Bad part is I don't have the original ps pump.

Maybe a steering gear box repair shop?

Not any that I know of. I looked around today without any luck.
