Taking the gauge cluster apart... help please

Hey guys, id first like to start off by saying this- I do NOT want to do this to get people to think I have less mileage on my truck (even though the cluster is out of a different truck) I just want to roll the miles back on the cluster because I am rebuilding it and I want to be able to keep track of how many miles im puttin on the ole girl when shes done.

Anywho, I want to take the gauge cluster apart but I dont want to mess anything up... So i'm looking for tips on how to do this and stuff to watch out for... any help is appreciated, thanks

Going from memory... I believe, on mine, I lowered the steering wheel to make it easier to remove.

Remove the battery cable first.

Remove the choke knob (if you have one), windshield wiper knob and bezel nut.

Remove the light switch knob. It has a small metal thingy you have to push in as you are pulling to remove it.

Remove the speedometer cable and oil sending unit copper tube (find some sort of plug if you can) be careful, you might spill some oil.

Disconnect the wiring harnes cable from the backside.

I believe that is it.

However, it may be easier to just keep a sticker with the mileage on it so you can keep track of the mileage. I've done that with all my engines that I've redone or replaced on my vehicles..

I guess i shoulda been more clear... I have it out of the truck, sitting on the workbench... Its just when I go to take the gauges out of the bezel I dont want to mess anything up... sorry, I shoulda been a bit clearer on my description, but thanks for the reply 68gmsee!

Actually I should have read a little better....

I don't think you should have any problem. The only thing that happened to me is that the small cardboard cylinders for the signal lights were totally rotted out and basically had to make some new ones.

Do a search if yours are bad. Someone used pvc plastic pipe to replace them.
