Converting stock AC to orafice tube and acumulator??

Anyone tryed this using the stock evaporator?? I've seen picture of some trucks with an acumulator and orifuse tube, but not sure if there is a budget way of doing it. I figure i'll need just an acumulator off a 75 or 78 chevy and a retrofit orafice tube kit. Am i wrong??

If this can be done, what to do with the pressure valve tube that is built into the stock evaporator??

ttt

OLD AIR PRODUCTS has a kit, but it is not a economy kit.

I used a mid 70's evap and had hoses made to fit, added a pressure switch for the compressor clutch, and bammo! A/C is cold. I can track down some part #'s if you want.

Re: Converting stock AC to orafice tube and acumulator??

I kept all the stock parts and install the orifice tube with the compressor switch. had to cut and weld on one new fitting, new stock expansion valve and bought a new aluminum condenser and Sanden compressor. spent about $600 and it gets the cab down to about 60 degrees. haven't tried it in really hot weather yet. Changed it all to 134a refrigerant.

Re: Converting stock AC to orafice tube and acumulator??

Which tube do you mean? The later evap's lower (hi side) tube holds the orifice and has a short length of hose out to the condenser. It exits the evap case straight forward and low, just above the framerail and inner fender. My stock evap was pretty oily (poss leak), so I was planning on replacing it anyway. That's where the whole later-model evap mod started.
I'll have to see if I have some pics. If I don't, I'll get some this week.
