Sending unit.

my 72's gas gauge wasnt working when i bought the truck, so i sent it 2 the shop fer da inspection, and had them look. the mechanic said i needs a new sending unit, so i get a new one, stuff it in, and voila, it doesnt work right. the gauge, even when the tank is stuffed full, sticks right at 1/4 tank. the gauge satys there until the level in the tank is down past 1/4, and its functions normally past there till empty. i ripped the tank apart again, and found that the sending unit float is definelty not hung up on anything. so, what gives? anybody got ideas?

I just recently had the same, identical problem. I just went ahead and got new, everything. I replaced the sending unit first, then the wiring and then the gauge. It was the gauge. I originally got the gauge from LMC and I still had the problem. It was only reading 1/4 tank. I sent it back and got one from Brothers here in SoCal and it worked perfectly. I just decided to replace everything because you never know with these trucks. You'll buy one new part, but everything else attatched to it is still going to be 33 years old. If you have the sending unit out, hook it all up as if it was inside and move it up and down. It's easier this way because you don't have to keep taking the sending unit out. Let me know if you have any other problems.

The Brothers gauge was about $70, but I needed it right away, so I was willing to spend that much. I was going on a 6 hour trip and I needed one before I left in 2 days. I was really depending on the gauge I got from LMC. The gauge from LMC wasn't factory spec. because the directions it came with stated that I didn't need to use the resistor that is found on the back of the factory gauge I already had. I thought that was weird. It must have been built in. I try to put factory parts/accessories on my truck. I have had some bad luck with LMC. Luckily there are about 5 good shops here in SoCal that specialize in these trucks.

It is pretty interesting makin a road trip with no guages...My ols Longhorn had no speedo nor fuel guage. I had to go from Cetral Tx up here to Cen Ohio once...interesting trip too.
I watched the mile markers real close, kept notes of the miles driven when ever I got onto another highway or into a new state, (since the numbers would chainge) and I carried a 5 gall can of gas in the back...got lucky and never had to use it.
Never ran out while delivering pizzas in it either, but that was more like luck than anything. Came close a few times.
