96 4.3 wont start
I went to move my s10 today & it wont fire. Cranks & cranks. It has oil pressure when cranking so I know its not the sender. Ill try a cap, coil & plugs & see if that helps. I dumped a little gas in the TBI but not even a pop. Its got quite a few miles & I was a little worried about the timing chain, but the way it sounds on the net they dont go out very often. Any other ideas what to look for? Talk slowly, Im pretty dumb when it comes to the newer stuff. Todd?...Thanks...

Check for spark first. No spark? Ignition module is toast. Does the rotor turn when you crank it? If so then the timing chain is good. If the rotor is not turning during cranking, the timing chain is toast.
If the engine turns over fast like no load on it, the chain is my first guess. Can you hear the fuel pump prime with the key on? |

Fuel pump primes. I havent had the cap off yet but will tomorrow. I held the pedal to the floor for bit & it coughed one time. Where is the module on a 96? It most definately needs a tune up either way.

Re: 96 4.3 wont start
My first guess would be spark plug wires if they haven't been replaced in a while.
Especially if the weather has been damp there like it has been here. I'm not that familiar with the newer motors though.

Under hood, passenger side, upper engine area, mounted on front cylinder head below valve cover under ignition coil. Trace the coil wire back from the distributor. The ignition module is bolts to the same bracket as the coil.
The coild and ignition module are connected together with the small harness. |

Re: 96 4.3 wont start
I called a mechanic friend today & he said he has been replacing a LOT of basic tuneup parts because of the humid weather. He also told me that the 4.3 isnt really known for timing chain issues & he gave me a list of things to check. I have to tint windows tonight so maybe Ill dig into it this weekend. I doubt its ever been tuned up, its gonna get one now...

Re: 96 4.3 wont start
they call that an ignitor. it has no logic, just a remote switch for the coil.
I can call you tonight. |
