Re: lifter tick

If unleaded does it its usually a ping at higher rpm's and its sometimes hard to hear unless you know what your listening for. Could be alot of things but I'd listen under the hood and if its way up high, like under the valve cover, its more than likely a lifter, very well known and no big deal unless you wait to long so check and let us know where its coming from. I took my 350 apart and 4 or 5 rocker arms were finger tight. May also be a bent pushrod.

Re: lifter tick

Unless the valve seats have been replaced with hardened seats, the noise you hear could be the valves. These motors were manufactured when lead was still being added to fuel as a lubricant. Try putting some "Instead-O-Lead" or some similar product to see if this will help(I've even been told Marvel Mystery Oil works well). I mixed it with my fuel everytime I filled my '64(250) up, and never had any problems. The reason I started using the additive was because of "extra" valvetrain noise and my Dad mentioned that he used it in his old 8N Ford tractor.

Re: lifter tick

The 350 in my truck was starting to make alot of noise so I changed the oil. A lot of todays oils are not what they used to be. Most of todays 40 weight oils are like 20 weights used to be. When I started using 40 weight Rotela all the noise went away.
