What do I need to look for when I purchase an engine stand?

If you can carry it it ain't worth having. What I mean by that is buy one built with heavy wall tubing,get 4 wheels and a pin type lock instead of the bolt that cinches the tube.
Those are the main things I can think of .Also get a drip pan so it;s easier to clean up after tearing an engine down.

Ive had both type and honestly havent had problem with any at all. The ones with 4 wheels are easier to roll around though.

Honestly, best bang for buck - Go to your local Sams or Costco. Get one of their Goodyear Racing blue and yellow engine stands. They're like $70 and I've loaned mine out for tearing down two L6's, an LT1 and an LS1 and rebuilding. It folds up neat for storage, great construction, thick steel, It gives good adjustable mounting points, sturdy and it's easy to grip and spin the engine block for access all around.

One word of advice: Before you mount anything to it, take some white lithium grease or something and really lube up the tube that lets you spin the block. I don't think it said to do this in the instructions, but it makes a world of difference when you got a big ass engine on there.

even though a sbc only weighs about 550 lbs fully dressed and thats likely to be the heaviest thing you will have on there get a 1000lb engine stand. they are a lot sturdier in general.buy the highest rated stand you can afford

Last thing before I shutup:

The Goodyear Racing stand is a 1500lb stand.

I have an ac delco I bought at oriellys,haven't had any problems with it,dores what I need it to.Looks like this one.The one with four wheels is better than three

Definitely 4 wheels. The 3 wheelers will try to turn over too easy as you're pushing the engine around.

Get the 4 wheel model with 2 folding legs and support braces from the back bone to the legs. It will do all you ever need it to do.
I have 3 engine stands in my garage. The other 2 I have besides the one described above are like blown70gmc's and a Delco one just like Brainchilds. BELIEVE ME, you don't want to have a steel headed big block on one of these. If you want a pic of the sturdiest one, I'll put one up here when I get home.

If you don't do anything else, be sure to get a 4 wheeled stand. My buddy has a 67-ish vintage 426 hemi valve cover that's smashed thanks to a 3-legged stand.

my dad bought ours nearly 30yrs ago and iv never had any trouble out of except for losing a wheel about 5 yrs ago although if it was me buying one id get the biggest and heaviest iv seen them strain with big blocks

We have one my dad bought years ago it was made with round tubing instead of the square and seems to be stouter than the square tubing ones we've had. The biggest engine we've put on it was a LARGE 6 cyl. Diesel out of a big tractor and it held it fine no problem spinning it and all. The only problem with it is it is one of the three wheels but we don't push the engine around much and you do hook it up to a hoist so if the stand goes over the engine won't hit the ground.

And get one from Harbor Freight. I love mine, also have their engine hoist. Some of the harbor freight brand tools are crap, but not their heavy equipment. These are well built and very cheap. I'd rather spend my money on the truck itself.

I just purchased a 1000lb engine stand from Schucks. I just put my 454 on there.. It holds it fine and doesnt bend or move or anything, but can you work on the motor while its on the stand??? Just seems a bit scary to me....

If you push on the motor it moves up and down a bit. ahahah... I used grade 5 bolts which i know are plenty. Nervous workin on my baby on that thing.

A close friend of mine rebuilt his LT1 and then rebuilt his roommate's LS1 on that same stand without any problems.

Be sure you lube the shaft that the engine is bolted to with white lithium grease to make it really easy to spin in place.

I bought a schmucks one. I was doing it on the cheap. I put my 455 on it. It is not even close to level. That piece of crap leans forward so much its scary. I keep the hoist attatched to it because I dont trust the stand.

Ya, mines a bit wobbly, but its s upposed to hold 1000 lbs ya know.. Should be fine. ahaha.. We will see...

Me and you are twins.. I have the same setup.. Lift and stand...

You have the manifolds, waterpump, and alternator on there still. You should be fine, that stuff kinda goes on last, then pic it up and put it in the vehicle....
