383 Idea

IF DOING A REBUILD.....WHAT ALL IS CHANGED WHEN TAKING A 35O UP TO A 383? IS IT JUST THE CRANK AND RODS??? SAME PISTONS AND EVERYTHING ELSE?

crank..pistons..you dont have to change rods..flywheel(flex plate)..harmonic balancer..and some clearance work on the block and rods

When the 383's first became popular(several yrs back), there were several kits out that used a 400sb crank with the mains ground undersized to fit the 350 block(approx .200). They also used the shorter 400 sb rod combined with a stock 350 piston,& while everything fit,& pretty much cleared the block, the shorter rod caused heavier side loads on the pistons/cylinders(more friction & wear). With all the aftermarket parts available now, its better to run a 5.7 or 6 " long rod & an aftermarket piston. there are also many aftermarket cranks avilable to drop right in the 350 block (for about the same cash as a reground 400 crank). This does require a little clearancing in the block, & on the rods for cam clearance as BigJim mentioned...but straightens up the rod angles, & gets you a freer running/ longer living 383 (also higher revving....& we all like that ).
