Help! convert 72 3/4 ton to 4X4

First, let me apologize if this has already been addressed. My unskilled search of past posts didn't pan out, so here goes.

I have a 1972 3/4 ton regular box GMC truck with automatic trans and pwr steering/disc brakes that I would like to convert to 4X4. I have access to a 1967 4X4 chassis with axles, steering assy (non-power), drum brakes, 4 spd manual trans and transfer case, etc. Will my coil sprung 72 frame have the mounting points to directly transfer the 67 4X4 leaf spring running gear? If not, is there much to adding/transferring them (if it can be done at all)? I suppose I could transfer my body etc to the 67 frame, but my 72 frame is in much better condition, so that would be my second choice.

Please let me know if I didn't provide enough info, and I'll see if I can find out whatever else is needed.

A second related question...can I transfer the power disc brakes to the 4X4 axle?

I've never had one of these trucks before and really have no knowledge of them at all (does it show...?), but I'm looking at tackling the project anyway. Vehicles are vehicles...right?

And feel free to laugh at my beginner-ness...just not too hard please. ;>)

Thanks!

is the 67 frame a 3/4 ton also
I think you would have to get a newer front axle to convert to power disc because the 67 should have a d44 5f which is a closed knuckle front end

some one chime in if i'm wrong

Re: Help! convert 72 3/4 ton to 4X4

Welcome to the 67-72 Truck Board from West Michigan!

Using a 4x4 frame with running gear is the easiest way to go as the two wheel drive frame would need some modifications. As mentioned a newer front axle with disc brakes is the way to go as the disc brakes off of a two wheel drive will not fit.

Good luck on your project!

Jim

Re: Help! convert 72 3/4 ton to 4X4

If you could get a 71 or 72 4x4 frame/drivetrain, you'd be better off.

The 67 will have the Rockwell transfer case, closed knuckle front axle. The Rockwell parts availability is somewhat limited, they are somewhat loud and if you get low on gear oil, you'll probably do damage like just happened with me. The front axle turning radius is worse than an open knuckle axle and disk brakes aren't easy to swap to it. The 67's frame takes some work to swap power steering onto it and you'll also find if you want to lift the truck, their are issues concerning the spring lengths used in 67.

A 71 or 72 frame/drivetrain will gain you the better/newer NP205 transfer case, the front axle will have disks already and it will be an open knuckle design. Adding power steering will be just a bolt on if it is not already on the frame and you will have many lift kit options available.
