1972 Mystery Door Holes - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hello all,

My apologies if this comes across as a stupid question to the experts here, but I need some words of wisdom.

There are holes in the top steel section of the interior of the doors on a '72 Chevy Pick-up, just below the vent window.

What are these holes for?
What should be in them (cap/trim?)?
Are these only on '72's?

They are only on 72's They should have a screw in them. It looks like the passenger door already has the screw.

yes that is the differant between 67-71 doors the holes are 72 only

I was told some time ago that by '72 some of the first trucks of this generation (67's & 8's) were starting to see some separating from having their doors slammed; Adding the screw was a fix by GM engineers.

Ford trucks never had this problem because their doors would eventually be blown off by a passing Chevrolet anyway...

its wierd, ive seen lots of doors without the holes there and ive never seen a cracked one.

blazers have those holes there too

Some doors had a problem with splitting outside in that area.I`ve only seen a couple and never had one with the problem.You`d think in over 30 years they`d all be split if it was really a problem.

I talked to a guy who retired @ the St. Louis Plant. He claims him & a co-worker got a small bonus for that idea. It made it easier during assy. Have no idea if he was BS but was retired from the plant claimed he put 1,000's of doors together.

I found this quote on another website about classic chevy trucks ("Doors on the 1967-72 body style interchange, however, the 1972 units are different. Where the wing vent vertical post meets the lower window opening, the 1972 only has a 1/4" dimple! This is an improvement! Here, a horizontal metal screw helps better hold the two door halves together when exposed to rough use. Holes on the inside upholstery surface are also different because of the change in door panels."

i was at a local junkyard today and was a 72 chevy, with 72 plastic doorpanels (thats how i knew it was a 72) and it didnt have these reiforcement screws. ??? did not all of them have it? maybe someone put diffrent panels on? it had a highlander seat in it to, so im sure it was a 72

Someone probably changed the doors out at some point. You can take a 67-71 door, put in the 72 window regulator, and then you can use the 72 door panel.
