It would make you have to shift gears manually! I just prefer manual transmissions but what it would do for you is get you a transmission for cheaper (I'm guessing) and probably give you less trouble (just guessing again). That of course is just my opinion and the less trouble part is part of the reason I prefer manual transmissions.

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb

If it's a th 400 (?) with a stall in it, all you meed to do is replace the stall converter to something that is more streetable. If I remember right a 300 stall you need to have the rev at 2500 rpms to launch (drag racing) I guess you could drive it on the street but to much of a pain for a daily. I might be off on the stall info, but they are still not optional for a daily driver.

You'll be sitting at stop lights sounding like your on the tree at an NHRA pro-stock event......

2800 stall would not be streetable for a stock type engine. You should be able to get a stock type converter at any parts house.

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb

A good converter should be anywhere from $150 to $500 for a brand name, like B&M. I think it should be like 1500 stall, but don't quote me on that. Don't worry TOO much on the 305, my 67 has a 305 and it is a good motor, they put them in from 70's till about 99, they are decent enough for mileage and power.

Possibly, I ran a 2400 in the Chevelle and it was the tightest stall converter I had ever experienced.

All you could do is try it, and if you don't like it pull it out. If it's a little loose all it will do is create a little more heat and lower your in town MPG. It will work with a stock engine, a little overkill, but will work.

On a side note, my truck has a 305 in it, stock with headers. While aneimic as all hell it's dead reliable and gets 16 on the freeway at 65mph.

Don't write the truck off because lack of hp, that can come later.

Good luck with your quest

Re: im going to look at a truck tomorrow 71 swb

Why don't you ask a board member that lives in the area to look it over before you waste your time and gas. I would probably offer the board member a little money for there time. Maybe 100.00 or so. They could take pictures of the problem areas and check for major bondo. The problem with driving all that way is it will be hard to stop yourself from buying it when you get there. You won't want to go home empty handed. JMHO.
