Steering column questions….

I pulled my steering column out in preparation for paint.
I needed to remove the small bolt on the end of the shaft for the added clearance and the bracket it was holding was broken.
What does it do, I see there is an angled slot perhaps for adjustment? Are there replacement parts for these or will I need to get them from a junk yard?

Re: Steering column questions….

is that a standard (manual) on the column shift? Reason I ask is that I've seen that angled slot and band use to properly adjust the shifting mechanism(s) (that make sense?)... Don't know if it's on the auto columns too....

Re: Steering column questions….

Its the auto column. I'm wondering how necessary that part is?

Re: Steering column questions….

I went to the salvage yard and got new straps to replace my broken one.
What does this adjustment do & how do you adjust it? I need to pull it off to paint everything and want to make sure it works properly after I'm done.

JDB- if you need one strap I can send it to you....LMK.

Re: Steering column questions….

I don't think it does anything; When I put my column back together, I adjusted it about the middle of the slot, which is about where it was when I took it off. Really, that is the only place you can put it, because too far one way or the other and the bolt won't line up with the hole. BTW, mine is a manual non-linkage column (4 speed on the floor).

Thanks Dan, My guess is it takes up slack in the column and probably more so with the auto linkage. I'll mark it and try to move it around and see if it makes it tight etc. I'm sure it's not to hard to figure out. I was hoping someone has done this before.
