converting to 4x
So, I have seen this topic posted several times in the past. I have been converting them for over 20 years---you guys think there may be a market for a kit? I could put one together probably for a couple hundred, including an aftermarket bumper mount if wanted.

Re: converting to 4x
I think some might be interested in the kit. What all would be included?Price would be another factor, for the same price or less could they go and buy a 4wd chassis to use? That might draw some away.

Re: converting to 4x
At this point, kit would include the rear shackle frame mount, shackles, and a front x-member---maybe springs. I am doing the kit a little different and trying a 53'' spring (custom) and not the factory 44''

Re: converting to 4x
Changing a 2WD to a 4X4 would also require the spring perches for the front springs to replace front coils. Front motor cross member, transfer case bracket are also important pieces.

Re: converting to 4x
Umm, yeah, I know that. The biggest obstacle is getting the front springs in the correct location so the truck tracks correctly. Like I said, I've been doing this for over 20 years.

Re: converting to 4x
kwmech,I can see interest in people wanting this kit.I could see them wanting all the parts you mentioned. As to the motor and transfer case crossmembers,as many people as there is converting blazers to 2wd,etc I can see it not being hard for the buyer to supply the crossmembers. But,if you have some that you are wanting to get rid of,by all means do what you want.

Re: converting to 4x
I thought it would be easier than a complete frame swap. I do have a few factory x-members. There was a post earlier about an engine tubular crossmember that looked pretty nice. I've got some pieces being machined at the moment for a customer. When I get them back and welded up I'll postup some pics before and after I install them. Then you'll see what I can offer if there are any parties interested.

I am talking of something to get the basic front leafs installed without a complete frame swap, and still be able to drive the truck while installing the parts. |

Re: converting to 4x
If your looking at going with a 53" spring, are the perches spaced further apart or are they re-curved to give an all spring lift?

Re: converting to 4x
The last swap I did with the factory syle spring--44'' long---laying flat, 3 leaf, lifted the truck about 9'' over where it sat with the 2wd suspension. 33'' tire fit without any problems. My thought with a 53'' spring in approximately the same orientation would give a smoother ride.
edit: so to answer your question--yes. The bigget problem lies with the drivers side of the frame where the parking brake cable goes thru. Happens to be the same place, where on the 4x frame the shackle hangar sits Last edited by kwmech; 05-20-2007 at 06:28 PM. |
