Should I replace body mounts first, then begin cancer repair?

G,uys,
As I have read about lining up body parts (doors, fenders, etc) I have gathered that the top needs to be on, but also that the body mounts are crucial in proper fitment and alignment. I have major repairs to do on my 72 CST as far as body goes (rocker boxes, inner and outer rockers, a and b pillar, front cab mounts, floor, etc,) you name it and I probably need to replace it. My question for you all is should I take everything off down to frame and then put the tub and such back on using new body mount kit and then replace the sheetmetal once it is back on the frame? I figure I only get one chance at this deal and I want to do it right the first time and not create a trainwreck from doing things out of order.

I am certain many of you have been down the path that I am beginning and appreciate any insight you can provide. Thanks in advance for your advice!

Re: Should I replace body mounts first, then begin cancer repair?

are you going to pull the body off the frame?

you might have to repair the area were the body mount bushing sits and were the bolt runs through. mine were smashed and or rusted out. all but 1 or 2

I don't really know about he new mounts.

once I got the body back on the frame I lined it up with the new body mounts and then pulled em out. I am using 1/4 inch pieces of steel to replace them while im doing the work. that way when I go back the new poly bushings Ill know how much approximately i need to shim. I did get it all straight and lined up before I cut up the floor and A pillar.

Re: Should I replace body mounts first, then begin cancer repair?

Durrty,
Yes, Ii am planning to take the body off the frame. I am not sure if the area around the mounts is rusted out or damaged. I will have to take a look and see.

According to the pictures that jhow66 linked in the thread, he took the body off and put spacers beteween the doors and the where the tailgate goes. He romoved the body and did all the work with the body off of the frame. A lot of pictures to look at but extremely informative. I am thinking that is the way I am going to tackle the project. Remove the front clip, then take the body off of the frame and support it properly and do the repairs that way.
