72 cheyenne engine ????????

I am looking at a real clean swb 72 cheyenne . V-8, auto, p/s, p/brakes, cold air, front stabilizer, etc. The truck looks originaland has had 1 paint job on the outside. That looks like that is all except somebody added tilt, tack, rallys and duals. That has all been documented. There is folders on everything that has been done. The truck has 24500 on it and i think it is correct. The papers show when original man sold it in 85 and it had 10800 on the odometer.
The thing that has me stumped is it is a 307 2 barrel that looks like it has been there forever. Water pump and some rattle can is about all there is. This truck still has the original upper hose and all the original hose clamps under the hood. This is a nice-nice original survivor. I have had about a hundred of these trucks in all shapes and forms. But i have never run across this. My buddy said he saw a original super years ago with a six banger. I just wanted to know if anybody has run across this before. All of the paperwork shows that this truck looks like it is correct.
I am really thinking about buying this truck, but i am not crazy about 307.

I figured PICKMUP, WES, JOES JUNK, IRONMIKE LONGHORN MAN OR ONE OF YOU OTHER TRUCK GUYS COULD HELP ME OUT.

This is a NICE straight truck.

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

Any luck on the SPID? Maybe it was a special order. How about a build sheet behind or in the seat?

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

The spid sheet did not say 350 or 307. It looks to be all original and correct. The title, vin and spid all match. I did not look at frame numbers. I was in a hurry like usual. I did not think about build sheet. I will try to look for build sheet. I just figured that somebody has seen this before. The truck is over a hour away. I ended up knowing the guy that owns the truck at this time. I worked with him in the late 80's. I think he is the 4th owner. Thanks for everyones help.

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

The Cheyenne package has nothing to do with the engine size, your friend is right, you could get a Cheyenne with a sixer if you wanted.
I don't blame you for not being crazy about the 307, first thing I'd do is ditch that thing.

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

I agree with Powell. Cheyenne was just a trim package. similar to my '56 Bel Air. The only option on the whole car was the Bel Air trim. The only thing I would caution you on is the mileage. From '72 to 85 is enough years there to turn the odometer once. Persanlly I always assume the trucks I get to have at least 100k on them when I get them, unless they are just super clean. JMHO.

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

If the truck has an "E" engine code in the VIN, and no optional engine listed on the SPID, it came with a 2 barrel 307 just like what you have. As others have noted, the trim packages had nothing to do with engines.

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

while I have no photo proof, i have seen a well worn, all original inline 250 powered 72 cheyenne super. CCS was the first 3 of the VIN, and the SPID matched everything.
Like the others said, just trim.

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

a 350 should say "350 cu in" on the spid. and it will have a q-jet

How does it run? The 307 does not know its a 307, only you do. 350's are cheap as well, unless you are looking into the truck as a #'s match B-J type ride.

The 307 in a 69 i just picked up runs much better than a 350 powered 72 i had (although the 350 did have a th400, which is a power robbing transmission in most small blocks)

unless its doggy because it has the wrong gears or transmission, i wouldnt sweat the engine choice on a nice survivor like your describing

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

A friend of mine's dad had a 72 Cheyenne factory Black on black, the only option it had was the Cheyenne package. Sounds like your truck is correct with the 307. Lets see some pics!!!

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

Thanks guys for all the help. The spid has nothing about engine. I knew all of the 307 were 2 barrels. But all of them were in customs. I knew that the 350's were q-jets. The numbers all say CCE which means v-8. The 307 does not bother me. I have several all complete original 70-72 350's. I would not swap the 307 because it is all original. If i did i would crate it up and keep it with the truck. I know that it is not a number matching camaro or vette. But it does seem to be a nice survivor. I forgot to take pics. yesterday. If we can come up with a price on this truck, i will probably make a quick road trip. Hopefully i will have pics, in a few days. I am trying to finish my new 40x60 shop and finish the frame off on a 68 and my 70 swb. This is not a good time to be buying a high dollar truck. I will probably play with it a while, until somebody wants it more than i do. I forgot to say that i think it would be worth moremoney if it was a 350.

Thanks again guys

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

it sounds like a high dollar ride from your description --- i dont have a ton of experience with trucks except that a 402 or 396 adds 5k to the price automatically if its in nice survivor shape like you describe.

I wouldnt think the 307 to 350 would be that big a jump, but it may be a little

If the truck were 8-10k, i wouldnt worry abut it --- if it were 15-18k, i would be asking the questions you are asking now myself

Re: 72 cheyenne engine ????????

I remeber seeing my first Cheyenne with three-on-the-tree.I realized there was no drivetrain involved in the cheyenne pkg, just something you`d rarely see.
