Need Help

I switched out clusters and now my temperature gauge pegs out at extreme hot when I turn on the key and stays there. I thought it might be the new cluster so I placed the old one back in and it does the same thing. Has anyone had this happen or know how I can fix it?

Also, I replaced my amp meter with a volt meter. I thought i could connect the positive side to the printed circuit and ground out the negative side with a wire to a ground on the truck, but when I test the printed circuit with my volt meter it doesn't show any power going to the amp meter location on either side of the printed circuit. Should there be 12 volts going to the original amp meter location or do I just need to run 12 volts from a different location to the volt meter?

Thanks in advance for any help. I am trying to get the cluster back in so I can drive it to work tomorrow.

There are two 4 amp fuses that might be your meter prob. You should only need one for the + side. Check temp sender wire for bare spot.

On your temp guage,mine did the same thing to me it turned out that the wire to the sending unit was grounding out on the alternator. Just an idea.

Remove the wire from the sending unit on the engine. Turn on the key. The gauge should read cold. Ground the wire & it should read hot. If that is the case you have a bad sending unit or one that is made for a light. If it reads hot with the wire dis. it's probably shorted like the previous post said. John is correct. There are 2 fuses mounted in rubber holders in the engine compartment. Both wires to the gauge should be hot. You can use eather one for a voltmeter with a ground.

I unplugged the wire from the temperature sender and made sure it was not grounding out under the hood and it still read extreme hot. Any ideas?

Also I left one side of my volt meter connected to the circuit and the other side grounded out and it still is not getting power. Where can I find the two 4 amp fuses that Might be the problem?

Does any one have any ideas on why my temp gauge would show hot when the sender is unpluged and the wire is not shorted out under the hood ( I lifted it up away from any metal)?

Does any one have pictures or know where the two 4 amp fuses mounted in rubber holders in the engine compartment are located?

The fuse holders are black molded rubber that are bullet shaped. One will be in the vicinity of the battery and connect to the junction block on the fender and the other around the drivers side headlight-voltage regulator area.
