nasty stuff in my oil?

I found all this junk about four months ago when I switched my valve covers out. Now I went back to get the casting numbers off of my heads, and it was back.

That was the drivers side. I cleaned it up, then went to clean up the passenger side and there was none there. Completely clean apart from the few oil spots. Should I put some engine cleaner in there?

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

looks like some water/coolant got in there. Possible bad intake gasket?

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

being that it's only on one side...
How often does the truck get driven?
Do you have a proper PCV system... PCV valve on one side, and a breather or fresh air hose to the air filter on the other side?

If by engine cleaner, you are talking about the motor flush... I would recomend never putting that stuff in your engine.

I agree. Is the oil cap on the valve cover or on a tube. If the cap is clean, it doesn't seem ver serious.

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

It does look like water/coolant mixed with oil. From what is the question. Unfortunately I know what it looks like pretty well. I had the oil light come on in an old truck and when I pulled the dipstick out it looked like that stuff on the stick. No bueno. It had circulated it everywhere by then and very expensive/time consuming to get fixed. It looks like your problem is much less severe but check the oil just in case.

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

Well it was on the PCV side, and none of it got through they system into my oil. My breather is clean too. I'll just reinstall my intake and see if it fixes the problem

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

Seen that happen getting the engine clean by washing with pressure washers & such. Also washing around the ol point style dist. and crackin caps at the car wash.

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

i'd also suspect bad pcv system as the cause

Re: nasty stuff in my oil?

I would change to a new PCV valve, make sure it is hooked up to constant vacuum. Then change to a high detergent oil like CASTROL. Run it for a while and see what happens. When - if- you change the intake manifold gasket, make sure you use thread sealer on the bolts as you can get coolent coming right up the bolt threads and that can get into the oil galley's. Usually when that happens, you will see coolent on the intake it's self and if into the oil, it would be visable on both heads.

The PCV vaulve is new, actually. And I'm running mobile 1 synthetic, I'm not sure if thats high detergent or not. But, being that I'm the one who installed the intake in the first place, it probably was my own fault that it leaks (assuming thats the problem). I just put some of the RTV silicone on each of the bolts before putting them in, maybe I'll try something different just to be safe.
