Most people run the alternator wire to the line side of switch or battery.

I use a painless hi amp relay. My main switch only controls the control wiring of the heavy duty relay. I also have a main in cab toggle switch wired in series with the main switch. This way I can shut off all of the power to the pump and engine with a flick of an in cab switch.
It's pretty slick.
Thanks for the advice, i think that i'll do the same thing.
