Wiring problem?
The fuse box rotted out in my poor Jimmy so I pulled a harness from a truck at the local j/y. Unfortunately there is a difference between the two (two heavy gage purple wires on the steering column) but I have a ride with friends today so I went ahead and put it in to see how my luck goes.
Everything has gone well EXCEPT for I have no taillights or turn signals. Bummer! I've checked the fuses and connections but I haven't anything yet. I'm hoping that it's in the headlight switch because it is REALLY crusty. The dimmer coil is unsprung, the shaft sticks, etc. I'm off to the parts house to pick one up but could it be that the wiring harness is incompatible? My truck rides on 42' swampers so I hate to tempt the law riding without any taillights.

Good luck, electrical problems always cause me much grief. There is a great electrical subforum on this site and the guys who frequent it are really good at helping track down problems!

Also, could be the harness you got was set up for guages or no guages and is different than what you had originally. Look at the schematic in the FAQ and you should be able to tell the difference and trace the wires. GMC Pauls has a FAQ on how to change out the harness from idiot light to guages as well. If you have 2 purple wires, that means its an auto column harness. Is your truck a manual?

My truck's a auto so the harness must have come from a manual truck. I did some testing and so far traced it to the steering column. On the replacement harness there was an adapter to go from the quarter round style connector to a rectangular connector. The original did not have the adapter it was quarter round to quarter round. I'll check out the electrical section and see if I can figure it out. I'm guessing a wire has to be moved to a new pin hole in the connector. It's that or I can't use this one at all without redoing everything
