headers and Y-pipe recommendations

Ok, I am going to break down and get headers and Y-pipe/ single outlet exhaust.
This is the delima, I haven't ever had the desire to buy non-dual exhaust until now. Reason being the truck will have a single remote mount turbo that we sell bolted in the back, so I need headers AND the y-pipe and it has to fit the truck, no smog stuff.... If it has an full exhaust with it that is fine since I will basically need that too until the turbo gets mounted.

So, what has anyone used or had experience with? I have been looking at Edelbrock but I am COMPLETELY open to options.

Re: headers and Y-pipe recommendations

With a turbo, headers don't really do anthing to the best of my knowledge. Every one I know using a remote mount turbo has used the stock manifolds. The stockers would be fine. I would just sand blast the stockers and find some way to finish em the way you like. The rest of the y pipe and the exhaust I would do custom. I wouldn't pay for an exhaust and then chop it up. IMO if you can put a turbo then you should be able to do the tubing.

Re: headers and Y-pipe recommendations

Here's how I would do it.

Get Hedman Elite long tube heads. These seem to be the best for for 73-87's that I've found. The collectors line up perfectly with a double hump crossmember. You WILL want a double hump crossmember with long tube headers. Your pipes end up simple, clean and straight with no funky bends like the weird single hump crossmember. Of course, if your truck is lowered significantly, then look into 3/4 length Chevelle headers and check with the guys who run lowered or bagged. True long tubes do hang below the frame about 2-3 inches, but at stock ride height I've not had a problem.

Find a GOOD exhaust shop and have them fab up the Y pipe to custom fit your truck. I would bring a pre-made Y merge collector since this is the best option for flow. 2.5 inch pipes into a 3" single merge should do the trick.

After that just run pipe to the turbo. I'm not sure about shortbeds, but on my longbed there is loads of room before the rear axle to put a turbo. If you can swing it, I would put it as close to the motor as you can.

Re: headers and Y-pipe recommendations

maybe i'm to much of a newb, but why even up grade the manifolds. why pay for long tubes to increase flow just to have it hit the turbo?

Re: headers and Y-pipe recommendations

I went with Thorley Headers that are ceramic coated and have a Y pipe. Reason I don't want the manifolds is well, they are ugly, and this will promote my site. I don't plan to gain much from the headers except looks, but we will see...
