dash lights problem -
I'm having a problem getting my instrument panel backlights to work. I've replaced the headlight switch, the bulbs, and the printed circuit board. I'm not sure what fuse it is in the box, but they all look good. Any suggestions as to what to try now? Also, the gas gauge is working, but not the temp or the ammeter.

From what i know on wiring (which isn't much) it could be a bad ground

With all the lights not working that might make sense, but I'm not sure where the ground for that is supposed to be. Anybody know?

most of the time it is wherever the mounting surface is, i had ground problems with my brake lights and i had to pull the housings and sand down to bare metal.

Im almost betting its the instrument panel fuse, they can burn out at the end to where you cant see its burnt out. Also check the instrument feed from the fuse block. if thats not it i would start from the cluster feed and work your way down.

Ive got a breakdown of every part but unfortunately its in my shop, ill try and see if i can get over there tomorrow and pm ya it. And you are talkin about the turn signal switch inside the steering column arent you.

The panel needs a ground wire attached to it to work correct. Well mine does anyway. I have it attached right by the driver's side with one of the screws that hold the back together.

not likely to be a ground, usually if the ground goes bad, the fuel guage goes out too.
If the tail lights, brake lights, and dome light work, then the fuse is fine. |

Not sure if its applicable on these trucks, but on some vehicles if you lose the tail lights you also lose the instrument lights.
Just a thought. |

Does light switch have anything to do with this?
I had a problem long time ago with the dash lights and it turned out to be a bad rheostat in the light switch- don't remember what the problem was, though... |

Heres a wiring diagram. See if your even getting any power at the panel light pin on the cluster plug, then chase it backwards. The diagram is alot easyer to read if you print all 4 out and tape them together. It looks like the brown 20a from the light switch hits both the regulator and the cluster plug. may be a loose connection on the regulator undre the hood. Or a miss wire from an interal regulated alt conversion.
