My 72 k20 is the same way. It has about 20,000 mi on a stock rebuild and 373 gears. It just doesn't have the power for a heavy load and hiway speeds. We have been spoiled by diesels!!
No power is the reason I bought a 383 to put in it--hopefully in the next couple of months. I think a 5 speed would make a huge difference when towing. john
