Detroit diesel in a 60-66

I am looking for any info on this. Did gm install the 3-53 at the factory. I would like to get some pics or maybe what parts to get together for the swap. I am looking for a power plant option for my 62 and want something different. I am a diesel tech so I thought why not a diesel. If anyone has some help that would be great.

Thanks Dennis

Re: Detroit diesel in a 60-66

No 10-30 C-series trucks, but P-series/stepVan had a diesel available.I think it was later, but StepVans came with 4BT Cummins mated to TH400s and would be a bolt-in.Search for threads on diesels in early GMs here. There have been a few conversions.I like the idea, too, and would like to do it sometime.I have a 300hp Peninsular Marine 6.5TD in my`92 that I may just part to do this swap into my`71 K/10.It`s mated to a NV4500.

Re: Detroit diesel in a 60-66

the Gama Goats used by the US Army had 3-53s mated to a gm 4 speed truck tranny (not sure if it was the sm420 or sm465).

Re: Detroit diesel in a 60-66

GMC used a converted gas engine in the larger trucs around that time called a toroflow diesel. Not very reliable , prone to blown head gaskets. They were used mostly in the tilt cabs.
