Unhappy HELP! C L A N K ! Purrrrrr.. clingclingcling purr! Repeat!

C L A N K ! Purrrrrr.. clingclingcling purr! Repeat!

So, normal routine this morning. About 55-60 mph on the highway, opening a Powerbar. And C L A N K ! with a moderate shudder, and I think "driveshaft uni-joints". Pull over, hit the flashers, pop the hood, nothing obvious, crawl under, front shaft seems ok, so does rear. Nothing else obvious around clutch lever, housing etc. Mounts look ok, too. So, start it up, reverse it. Seems ok. Forward a little, again. OK. So, go to merge and I hear a cyclic clingclingcling then the normal engine sounds then clingclingcling purr! Repeat! About two seconds at 45mph between the clingclingcling and the purr. No clingclingcling in neutral.

I managed to nurse it home (2 miles) and grabbed my kids car.

At this point I have mentally narrowed it to throw-out thru flywheel. But, I would really appreciate any opinions as to the source of this. It is my daily drive and I miss it already.

Anyone wanna help me this weekend?? Beer and pizza!! Tools & Trucks!!

BTW - 80 K10 SM456/NP205 behind a 350.

Thanks!\
- Dave

Re: HELP! C L A N K ! Purrrrrr.. clingclingcling purr! Repeat!

Boy was I WRONG!!

First, didn't know I had a limited slip diff. Second Not sure how I nursed it home with half the carrier cracke completely thru!

My guess is the 28 year old clutches in the diff finally went and parts of them git caught tween the ring and pinion gears. Destroying half the pinion gear teeth and chipping several ring teeth. Not to mention the carrier itself.

I only have these two feeble pics. But will get more later.

I already have a line on a Craigslist rearend. I hope the guy calls back.
