Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I'm considering making this change; lots of good articles on the board and elsewhere, but I feel like the Blazer tank conversion just hangs too low. Might just be me, but I can live with that
Are there other good options? So far, it looks like an aluminum tank in the $500 range is about it... |

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
Billa, i also have a LT1 in my 86 GMC S/B two wheel drive and was wonderin do you know of any companies out there that makes a gas tank that has the fuel pump inside of the tank? I just looked online at performanceonline.com and they make a replacement tank that fits behind the rear end but it doesnt have the fuel pump inside of the tank. I m using my stock tanks with and external fuel pump but everyone says i should get a tank with the fuel pump inside of it, i guess better for pressure and to cool the fuel pump. By the way awesome build, on youre build thread with the with the dyno information is that what you are looking to get with this build? This week im taking mine to a shop that has a dyno to get a new chipped burned and for tuning purposes. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks Michael.

LT1 notes

You can definitely use an external pump as long as it's made for fuel injection. Many folks are using the Aeromotive A1000 and associated components, which is my plan when I make the conversion. It ain't cheap, but it does work. The in-tank aftermarket pumps like the Racetronix are far cheaper and easier to plumb. I don't know of any other aftermarket tank companies that are set up for in-tank pumps. Yes, the DD Advanced run is what I'm hoping for with my LT1 build - note that it's going in my '95 Impala SS - not my '72 C10. If you've got an LT1, it should be OBD I or II...no chip, just a reprogram...? |

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I don't have a pic, or have seen it done, but i've been told by a couple people that 78-79 postal jeep tanks fit. They are only 16 gallons. I considered one my self, but went with a 85 burb tank.
There is at least one 'nut' *we are all nuts* in any area that has a collection of postal jeeps. Might be something to consider.

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
steelhorse,if you come to board meets you see stuff.Andy had his TPI truck and I had my panel with the original tank(mounted in stock location like a Blazer). It does hang a bit low but under a LWB it isn't bad.I don't think it would hit unless you really came over a drop-off.

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I've been wondering about the fuel tank and pump as well since I'm putting a 99' Vortec 350 in mine with all of the MPI system. I'm trying to get a tank and pump system figured out for under $500, which would be an in tank pump, and professional looking.
I've been looking at this tank with dimensions that are fairly close to being perfect. http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...rod/prd173.htm And adding one of their pumps: http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd84.htm I also found this article online which shows them putting one of Tanks Inc. fuel pumps in a new "old Mustang" fuel tank. You can't read the whole article unless you have a subscription but it shows that it is possible to put a pump in almost any fuel tank. From their description though they're using a tank with baffling built in. http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...Pump/index.php The baffling is the main that concerns me. I wonder if the resevoir tray will hold enough fuel with the rest of the tank sloshing around when near empty? Shouldn't be too big of an issue for street trucks would it? But anyhow, here's a few more places that sell/manufacture tanks: http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...ctory/home.htm http://www.nolimit.net/departments.asp?dept=1171 http://www.performanceonline.com/sto...me.php?cat=453 http://www.kustomtanks.com/ http://www.rickshotrodshop.com/truck.htm http://www.brotherstrucks.com/products.asp?dept=1018 http://www.earlyclassic.com/catalog.aspx http://www.ecklerstrucks.com/dept.as...id=150&level=1 Also Fuel Cell Guy, who had a website for a short time. I'm sure I'm missing a few, but these are the ones I can remember. Someone please let me know if my idea has any possibility of working. Last edited by 1972CheyenneSuper; 04-30-2008 at 03:37 AM. |

The ECE tank looks perfect for what I'm seeking - how did I miss that? The price is a little rough...but it always is for custom stuff...

Would a 73-86 blazer tank fit a 67-72 truck? There is one in my local junk yard cheap, I want to know if it will fit.

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I'll guess I'll post these too. These are board members installations that I have bookmarked.

I myself, am not to big on the large blazer sized tanks or the cutting of frames, but it is an option out there for the exceptionally handy.

I'm using this tank...
I've not mounted it yet, but holding it up in there, it seems to fit very nicely... http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/pa...prod/prd83.htm

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I have a 33 ford with a 5.7 TPI. I used a "Tanks" tank. Even with baffles in the tank, it was necessary to use a "sloush" tray (also Tanks). Without the tray, I would experience a lean condition which caused the engine to pop through the intake when I made a hard left turn. The tray is about 3" X 5" X 2" and attaches to the bottom end of the pickup tube.

I have this tank, and I understand the sticker shock... You will not be dissapointed! Yes, it does hang a bit lower than I prefer, but it is a very high quallity tank, and as soon as I got mine and installed it, the buyer's remorse dissapeared.. It went in like it belonged, and being stainless with all the fittings and in-tank pump provisions, I had no issues, nor regret. I'm running a ramjet350 (and once I get the timing mark issue resolved, it'll be awesome), I went to the local Napa and got an OEM in-tank fuel injection pump (I can't remember, but I believe it was an early 90's Chevy truck pump, check your engine's requirements) that fit like a glove. Hope it helps. Take a look at: http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f2...uck/cabon2.jpg

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
They do fit, just do some searches for tank install on the board. On my 69 long bed, i have to remove the spare tire bracket, move the rear cross member back about 4 inches, and cut the bed support out in the middle to get top clearance. If your going with a roll pan you will see it, but any good bumper should cover anything that hangs down.

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I will be heading down this same road very soon. I have heard somewhere that an S10 tank may fit. Don't know the years and still trying to run down the info, but I know some of them where fuel injected and should have the pump in the tank with factory baffles already there. Anyone with any more info?

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I put a 2000 T/A fuel tank in my truck. Came with the fuel pump too, and I got it for $50. I had to do a little trimming to get it to fit, not too much though. Pictures are in my build thread.

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
That's a plastic tank isn't it? My '02 Z28 has a plastic tank, when it came time to upgrade my fuel pump I installed a trap door cut into the top side, I used a marine boat compartment hatch to do the install. It looks factory I swear.

Re: Gas tank relo: Options other than Blazer?
I just bought a 78-86 Jeep CJ tank. It measures about 25"x18"x11". Its 15 gallons and the sender is 0-90 ohms like a Gm sender. The tank is $85 to your door and the sender is about $26 to your door. Thats the cheapest tank I could find that won't hang real low. I will be installing in a few days. Pics to come.
