All you need is a 700R from a late 80s or early 90s S-10 or full size truck or even passanger car, Shorten drive shaft, perfer 1 peice shaft TV Cable and bracket from (BTO) Bow Tie overdrives, and lock-up kit for converter, witch can be make by you. Your looking for around 500 to 1000 dollars.

Do it.
You can hack the bracket together by cutting down a stock one; that's what I did. The only really annoying thing that varies from installation to installation is the TCC wiring - namely because GM itself used so many different wiring setups inside of the transmission.

I just spoke to my local tranny guy yesterday about swapping out my th350 (3 speed auto). I told him I was looking to improve gas mileage but I wanted a bullet proof transmission and told him I was looking at a 700r4. His advice to me was to find a set of 3.42 rear gears (got 3.73's now, I think) and a th350 that could be used with a lock up converter. The lower rears give lower rpms and the lock up converter gives back the 10% of horse power that the converter robs, which translates into lower rpms again. All thos elower rpms translate to better fuel economy, the new gears and the new th350 can be had for approximately the same cost as a 700r4, and the th350 will last a whole lot more miles than the best built 700r4.
The only thing I don't know about yet is if the 3.42's will fit in my rear end. Some of the guys on here could probably straighten that out for you and me both. Sorry so long, but that's my input.

if i had to do it all over again, id stay with the th350 and just get the 307 rear end with tall tires. the best option for all round power and highway would be a 5 speed. the700r4 is just tempermental

I went with a custom rebuild of a 2004r tranny ,love it , it's rated for more hp than a comparabld 700r4 ,i've had it installed for 2years without a problem,25kmiles , used it to move from N.Y. to florida been using it hauling large loads of car bodies and parts all over and havent had a problem got it from www.fbperformance.com the best part is i get close to 16mpg with 411's

To each his own, but I'm happy with my 700R. They do have to be set up precisely, or you will have trouble. I went from 10 MPG with my 402 1 Ton to 14, simply by having a 700Rinstalled. I've got one in the Studebaker, too, and it's still fine after 2 years and 12K miles
