Motor upgrade!

Well...I was going to just leave the 305/4V V8 that was in the '72 (my '68's temporary chassis) since I'm going to be building an LSX for the original chassis anyway. But....

A buddy of mine just bought a new crate motor for his Camaro, so I'm buying the old low mileage 383ci stroker motor that was in it. Hopefully we will be swapping my old motor out for my new motor this weekend. Should make my '68 a bit more fun to drive while the custom chassis/LSX/T56 build (which could take 1-3 years) is going on!

I guess I'll have a good running (tho it does puff on start) mid 80's 305/4V coming up for sale.

Re: Motor upgrade!

I still have some cleaning, detailing, and fine tuning to do...but it's getting close! I finally opened up the secondaries today, and it's certainly got a lot more grunt then the old 305 did.

these pics are after the 383 stroker installation, and adding.....Accel spark plugs, Accel wires, Accel cap & rotor; Flowtech headers, Proform aluminum water pump, rebuilt alternator, new fuel pump, new heater core and radiator, rebuilt power steering pump, hoses and ps gearbox; Pioneer flexplate and rebuilt starter, and new March performance pulleys and brackets.

I still have a sway bar to add and some brake and suspension work to do, especially since I'm guessing now it will run low 14's or maybe quicker. The '70 Camaro it was in ran 13.8x's.

Re: Motor upgrade!

hmm... Id guess that if it ran 13.8s in a 70 Camaro, you could expect 14.5-14.7s out of it at the same track- unless of course either of you arent running stock weight. 100 lbs ~ a tenth, not to mention areo differences. It sounds like a pretty quick and fun truck!

Be wary of that re-wound alternator, I havent had very good luck with them.

Lets see a time slip on the racing section!

Damn those March brackets look great btw

Re: Motor upgrade!

the Camaro wasn't dialed in yet, especially for the 1/4 mi., and was really setup better for 1/8 mi. It had a 600 or 650cfm on it then... and though it has a 750cfm quadrajet now, it will get a 750cfm Holley or maybe a Demon. Pulleys added a couple of hp. The electrical was all stock then but I've added a few things there (and will add more upgrades to the dizzy), possibly including electric fans. This was the "fine tuning" I was refering to.
By the time I've shaved some weight here and there, and dialed it in to get the last 30-40hp out of it... I'm thinking it will run close to (or slightly slower then) it did in the Camaro.

now when I build up the original chassis for it with a LSX/TKO combo...I'm looking for much quicker.
It should be coming home soon.

Re: Motor upgrade!

well...someone should have had a camera.

I took the truck up to the car wash and cleaned it up some. While I was drying it off, some kid in an import with the fart pipe finished his ride and left. As he got up to the street (wierd entrance = 100yd drive to bays) I heard the r's come up and he popped the clutch...breaking the front tires loose for at least a full split-second (there's still a small amount of water on your tires), the wind up and shift to 2nd gear accompanied by a full fledged 1 tire chirp, passed the car wash...and he finally got out just before hitting 3rd. The guy in the bay next to me (drying off his H2) looked at me curiously as I chuckled, then mumbled to myself (awe shucks, he coulda had a V8) and laughed. I think he got it when I left though.....

I finished up, pulled the truck out, and idled all the way back up to the entrance. I checked left, then right, then left again and was clear to go...so I pulled out easily (RH turn) and once the truck was straight...I nailed the crap out of it.

The tail end went left a little so I cranked in some countersteer. Just as it straightened and started to hook (it certainly wasn't sitting still tho) it hit 2nd and went right just a tad, then the tires finally caught. I got out of it shortly after it hooked, looked down and I was doing 60 (in a 40). I'll bet the guy with the H2 could see the big ole grin on my face as I went by, working the wheel....all the way back to the car wash.
