Yeah, lol, I was shocked when I looked up under there. I think I'm going to put in one of those custom crossmembers from DIY4x4.

Re: solved the big block into a 67-72 4x4 clearance issue!

on the risk of being stupid, would that really be that bad of an idea if a square tubing brace was made to wrap under and welded/bolted on each side, to reinforce it?

like this:

Re: solved the big block into a 67-72 4x4 clearance issue!

You could do that and would work too Grade 8 and some good welds. Make it removable for easy pan removal too

Re: solved the big block into a 67-72 4x4 clearance issue!

I've got my 69's crossmember out at the present time to have it modified to give me the needed oil pan clearance. I'm going to cut it at that same level and have material welded in to allow the bottom portion to be dropped about 1". I hadn't considered doing it like pictured above with bolts securing tubing but that sure could be a good way to do it too. I'm not sure having that area removable would actually allow you to drop and remove the oil pan. Maybe if you could tilt the oil pan enough it would come out, but the crossmember is awfully close to the side of the oil pan at that location and of course the oil pan is quite a bit wider up top where it bolts to the engine.

Re: solved the big block into a 67-72 4x4 clearance issue!

Bought a 4x4 with a 396 in it once and the x-member was cut like that 'cept they took it to the next level.

Used some 1" square stock tubing as a spacer and welded it all back together.
Better than nothing for sure but still pretty scary.

Re: solved the big block into a 67-72 4x4 clearance issue!

I had to modify the DIY4X crossmember a bunch to make it fit the BB truck pan.
